Anyone else EBF larger, hungry babies - I seem to be constantly feeding??

DS2 is just coming up to 7 weeks. He was born at 9.12lbs and is now 14lbs. He feeds every half hour to hour ish (at best!) for about 20 mins each time and is fed on demand. He is obviously feeding well and using everything he gets as he is growing and thriving beautifully and I am really happy our bf relationship is going so well! Smile
He will cluster feed in the evenings rarely having more than 10 mins between a feed but will go longer (2 hours or so) overnight.
I am just wondering based on others experience will the feeding slow down a little/ get longer between feeds and if so when-ish? Just hard going with DS1 to also keep entertained and I feel I have almost abandoned ds1 - cue guilt trip!!
DS1 was also a big baby who fed well but he always went about 2-3 hours between feeds. So I could feed him and know I had a bit of time to either head of somewhere etc. I now end up feeling guilty to DS1 as I only go select places where I know that DS1 can play safely whilst I feed DS2 and he so much less of my attention.
Anyone else experience similar?

My DS was 9lb 7 at term and loves his milk. It is warm outside so your DS will be keen for fluids and is probably in a growth" spurt. Do you have a sling? If you can learn to feed in it your life wil be easier.

I'd be checking for tongue tie. He might need frequent feeds to keep up the weight gain. Or try him in a sling - he might want feeds for comfort hence the frequency.

DoItTooJulia · 21/07/2013 19:29

Yes!

In the end I decided that a lot of the feeding was comfort, so I only used to offer one boob every 2 hours. So I would always put him back on the same boob for 2 hours IYSWIM? I think it helped, but to be honest he was like it for 4 months, so I'm not really sure!

Maybe try and introduce a bottle? I didn't and then he became a bottle refuser, which in turn led to me stopping bf earlier than I wanted to because it was all bit too much for me by 8 months.

Sorry, I don't mean to be doom and gloom! But you sound like you are doing a great job x

You don't need a bottle to leave baby. My dd never had one, I went back to work at 9 months and left her previously.

I BF DS - he was just over 10lbs at birth. I'm still feeding DD at 24 weeks now and I can honestly say there was no difference at the beginning. They both fed loads, like you are describing until about 10-12 weeks.

That's probably unhelpful.

Well done & congratulations!

IcouldstillbeJoseph · 21/07/2013 20:35

Sorry, duh, DD was 7lb. That's the point I was trying to make! Badly!

YellowCanary1 · 21/07/2013 20:56

I find it reassuring that it should settle! I love feeding him just feel bad for ds1.

Can you try to fill him up as much as possible each feed? With my DS I found he'd have one side, then half an hour later the other side, then an hour later the first side again etc.

Once I started offering both sides or more at a feed he started going 2.5 hours, just like that. So first side, then 2nd, then 1st again until he refused any more.

Hello hunni it gets easier i have a 3 month old baby who is 18LBS!! BUT now he goes 5 hours sometimes he used to feed constantly but it will space out when they get older ( an then get quicker during growth spurts) but your doing a great jobx x

ShowOfHands · 21/07/2013 21:22

I don't think size makes an awful lot of difference. I've had two slightly smaller than average babies and both shot from below the 50th to off the charts within weeks. DD was 25lbs before she had anything but breastmilk, DS made it to 23lbs. Clearly bigger babies in the end but one was an efficient feeder who slept through early with well spaced daytime feeds and one fed at least hourly until they were nearly 8 months and didn't sleep through for years.

It does get better though. There are all sorts of feeders. Same as with adults. Some graze, some snack, some stick to square meals. But generally bfing does get easier as they get older.
