Where oh where is the pooooooo?

My DD (21weeks) hasn't pooed for five days now. I know that with breastfed babies they can easily go for a while with no 'motions', but she's never gone for longer than one day before now.... should I worry?

This has coincided with the hotter weather of course, but she's still producing lots of wet nappies, so doesn't appear to be dehydrated.

Any advice very gratefully received!

Sounds normal. Unless she seems unwell, I wouldn't worry at all. They do change from daily poos to irregular poos.

(You've not started giving solids have you? That often constipates them quite badly, particularly at this sort of age.)

DD goes through phases of not pooing for a while - just be prepared for a large explosion some time soon Smile.

I know she is much younger but we had this with DD last week (aged 6 weeks). We were getting very worried as it had been 6 days. Phoned the HV who said not to worry. On day 7 it arrived in all its glory and was a change of clothes and bath job if you know what I mean Wink

I wouldn't worry loomer unless she goes for another several days without pooing. I have heard of babies (on here) who have gone over 10 days without pooing with no ill effects.

Thanks everyone - you have put my mind at rest.
I will be in readiness with the industrial wipes - I expect she'll manage a huge explosion today, as we're going out for lunch with friends!!

Yes loomer, I would not leave the house without a complete change of clothes for both dd and yourself.

I speak from bitter experience.

If she seems well in all other ways do not worry. About her health, that is. I would worry a lot about how much poo there will be when she manages to go :o

wilbur · 08/06/2006 08:22

Oh yes, she'll DEFINITELY poo if you're out with friends. I'll never forget dd's explosion all over one of her cousin's brand new bouncy chair - I had to take the chair home and wash it, I was mortified. Arf!

NotQuiteCockney · 08/06/2006 08:24

You're not guaranteed a problem. DS2 was sometimes a once a week pooer, but produced normal-sized poos when he went.

But yeah, be ready for a scary poo, you might get one.

MrsBadger · 08/06/2006 08:24

I now have 'Where is the poo?' in my head to the tune of the Black Eyed Peas 'Where is the Love?', so I thought I'd share it with the rest of you... [evil grin]

FlameBoo · 08/06/2006 09:12

DH is convinced that laying them on expensive hand wash blankets etc with no nappy on is the best way to get them to poo Grin

DS is very irregular with the pooing, then explodes and needs showering off (which he seems to like the sensation of!!!)

Miaou · 08/06/2006 09:13

I now have first-hand experience that curry works too Grin

cornflakegirl · 08/06/2006 09:21

ds went ages between poos as a baby. i had endless conversations with the hv about it, roughly every other week, trying to work out how long was the maximum i should leave him before trying to induce poo. we settled on two weeks in the end (and yes, he did wait that long at least once, without any ill effects).

orange juice always worked for us (usually the day after administration). or swimming pool water! :)

lazycow · 08/06/2006 09:43

Ds regularly went a week or more at that age without pooing. I don't remember any particularly explosive ones though. Just be prepared in case. I quite liked the fact that I didn't have too many pooy nappies to change - made going out quite convenient on the nappy front.

Once they start on solids every thing changes believe me!!
