breast to formula/cows' milk at 13mths wind problems

I'm hoping that someone out there will be able to help us. I have breastfed our ds since birth and he is now 13mths. He has a morning and evening feed. As I'm 14 weeks pregnant with no.2 sI'm trying to wean him off the breast and onto formula/cows' milk. We have tried formula (2 types) on a couple of occassions and he seems to react with terrible wind- or rather trapped wind.
Has anyone else had a similar experience? Any suggestions of what to try next?

Just wanted to say well done on b/feeding for so long. My ds is 5 months and i am just starting to mix feed, no problems with wind as yet.

My first ds had terrible colic when given cow's milk to drink. I just didn't give him any. He had plenty of dairy with cheese, yogurts and fromage frais. He drank juice instead. Went to bed without a drink. Is not fat and has no fillings. He is 16 years old now. Did the same with the others except ds 3 who liked a drink of milk. They all drink milk now but didn't when weaned. Just give juice or water.

Have you tried fennel tea? I'm a true believer - every time wind comes up I suggest fennel tea. (Ouch, excuse the pun...genuinely accidental!) You can mix the formula with it, or give it to him to drink cool.

My 13mo dd, also still breastfed, can't seem to tolerate fridge milk either: she vomits it up every time. When she needs non-Mummy milk she gets SMA Gold, and so far she seems to be ok with it. Other than that no problems with cheese and yoghurt.

Fennel tea is widely used here in Germany for babies with wind problems too, and my DS loves it.

Have you tried Cow's milk yet (not altogether clear from your post)?

I'll be interested to see how you get on as my DS is 12mths and I am thinking of weaning too.

Thank you all for your responses. Mears, I'm reassured by your posting that your ds got his calcium from alternative sources - thank you.
Aussie Sim - I've done 24 hours back on the breast milk and intend on trying cows' milk next on the Weds morning feed - which will mean he will react in the afternoon - if at all. I will then try Goats' milk I think.
I will definitely buy some fennel tea to try aswell - thanks for that advice.
He does have cows' milk with his cereal and seems fine about that.
Does the body absorb milk differently if it is consumed within food as opposed to being drunk 'neat'?
Someone has mentioned lactose intolerance and wondered if anyone else is aware of that at all.
I really appreciate it when anyone who takes the time to read/respond to this thread. It really helps when you know you're not the only one with concerns.

Mears- this interesting as my kids BOTH hate milk.... so I don't give it,... it's yogourt and cheese and plenty of fruit and veg.

Hi
I've just weaned my dd off the boob onto follow on milk (she needs it up to age 2 for various reasons)
We tried lots of brands, we settled finaly on Hipp Organic follow on milk and now she has the odd cows milk drink every day too. DD is 16 mths now.

kiwisbird · 09/02/2004 20:21

my first reacted to cows milk by the way and goats milk was all he had til age 3, it was fine!
Sorry should have known to mention that too!

Again I'm reassured by your postings - thanks. I will let you know how we get on with the cows' milk on Weds but I'm not quite so worried now as even if he reacts badly I can try the goats' milk and then if all else fails I'll up the cheese, yoghurt, leafy veg etc.
Thanks again everyone

Sorry I have taken ages to let you know the results. Having tried cows' and goats' milk with similar results we gave the whole thing a rest for a couple of weeks. Since Sat I've given him Soya formula from a Heinz beaker. For the first three nights I then gave him a couple of minutes of breast milk. He didn't wake up with tummy pains at all in the night and was able to burp after the formula easily. But for the last 2 nights he's just had the formula and no breast feed. He has gone to bed awake and fallen asleep quickly by himself so I'm hoping that the soya formula has done the trick.

It's quite sad knowing that I won't be feeding him any more but with the next baby due in August I wanted my body to concentrate fully on no 2! If there is anyone else out there who is having problems with weaning off the breast, I would say don't worry but keep trying everything you can think of because hopefully for most children something will work in the end.
I'd like to say how reassured I feel every time I read another strand on this discussion board. There are always mumsnet readers who have brilliant advice. I shall continue to recommend the site to friends.

My daughter is 13 months and was breastfed for 7 months. She then went on to formula until now. My doctor (in Italy) has told me to start giving her semi-skimmed cow's milk. I am very surprised as I had always heard and read that babies need full fat milk. Any advice?

mears · 18/04/2004 11:06

The advice here is full fat milk till 2years, semi-skimmed till 5 yrs then skimmed after that. I personally have always used full fat. 3 out of 4 of my children did not drink milk once they were weaned from the breast. They like it now, youngest it 10yrs.
