Advised to stop feeding 9m old during the day?

JimbosJetSet · 11/07/2013 13:01

9m DS is very heavy, off the top of the chart in his red book. Although on approx 95% for his length, so a very big baby all round.
We co sleep so he feeds a lot at night. HV has told me to stop breast feeding him during the day and to only give him water to drink, as she says he is getting too many calories from the milk.
I offer him 3 healthy meals a day (BLW) and perhaps BF him 2 or 3 times during the day.
Should I stop BFing him during the day? It doesn't seem right to me but I would like to hear other people's experiences!

No HV is talking rubbish!

Is he crawling yet? Once she is mobile he will start to slim down, particularly once he is running around.

Milk is the most important source of nutrition until he is a year, HV seems misinformed about bfeeding.

HV told me a similar thing about my DD at 10 months. She was on the highest line for height and weight, so another biggun all round.
I was told that many people were just giving morning and evening feeds at that age and I should consider it with DD. However, as 5 says, up until a year, milk is meant to be their main source of nutrition, so I cannot see how her advice was correct.

DD really chubbed up before she learned to crawl and now she is walking she has slimmed down (well, 98th centile, but she is more of a 'toddler' shape now).
I didn't regulate her milk intake, just made sure she tried lots of different nourishing foods and took milk whenever she asked for it.
One thing I don't do is give much cheese/cows milk to her now as she still receives a lot of bm, so I don't think it's necessary.

I've just re-read my post and the HV was not a biggun all round.
Need to read before postingBlush

Frankly I'd want to cut the feeding at night down (not necessarily out) rather than focussing on feeding in the day

DuelingFanjo · 11/07/2013 13:28

Sounds like rubbish to me. She probably just thinks it's strange to breastfeed beyond 3 months.

I did find that my DS (Now 2.5) loved to breastfeed, wasn't a huge fan of food and really only started to chow down on main meals at about 2. I often wondered if it was me continuing to breastfeed that put him off food but always thought if I stopped breastfeeding my supply would dip and then he's have nothing! Anyway - at 10 - 12 months he started losing the chub as a result of walking and now he's a healthy, happy little boy who eats and still breastfeeds when he gets the chance.

Thank you guys, you have reassured me.
Action - ideally it would be great not to be feeding him through the night, but right now it's the only thing that ensures I get a reasonable night sleep, and I am not prepared to change yet!

I am sure he will be absolutely fine Jimbos.
I think they all get a bit concerned about their child obesity targets and go a bit OTT.
DD still co-sleeps and usually has a couple of big feeds each night. Really don't think it does her any harm at all and as you say, means more sleep for usGrin

I guess her rationale was because he has left the top of the weight graph so babies are not meant to be that big? But thank you, I have been reassured for now - I didn't want to withhold feeds during the day, it doesn't feel right.

Ds had same issue at 9 month check. He was born on 50th but shot up at 7-8 months. He didn't crawl, roll or bum shuffle and 2 months later walked and proceeded to even out. I think it's very hard to get an obese baby by breastfeeding.

TinyTear · 12/07/2013 11:21

Absolute rubbish I think...
Unless the baby reverse cycle, it needs nutrition and milk... if anything reduce the solids as food before 1 is for fun

sparklekitty · 12/07/2013 11:55

I was advised by HV to start offering solid snacks followed by milk at 9mo but then I said to her I'd like to feed to a year so this is starting to tip the balance I guess. My DD has really levelled out with her weight since she's been crawling.

We also cosleep and she feeds through the night. I'm getting a bit annoyed at the number of professionals that tell me I 'should' be night weaning her now. If we're all happy I don't see the problem tbh and as she starts dropping day feeds (which she is starting to do) I want to keep going at night to make sure she's getting enough cals

NoComet · 12/07/2013 12:08

Babies cannot read graphs and wouldn't care about them if they could.

Seeing if your DS will get a taste for water for the future, while it's this warm is a great idea, cutting down his BFs clearly isn't.

As others have said he will thin down when he starts crawling and walking. Then is the point to get DH/DP to give him a drink in the night not now.

IME hot weather and long bright days, unsettle small DCs and it's pointless doing anything other than going with the flow.

Belmo · 12/07/2013 14:19

My dd was exactly the same, and the HV told me I had to cut down feeds - I had a thread here.
I ended up ignoring HV and feeding her as much as she wanted. She was miles off the top of the weight chart at about 13 months, then shot up and off the height chart too!
At nearly 2 she still bfs alot, is really tall for her age, but hasn't put on much weight at all in 6 months and is perfectly in proportion.

JimbosJetSet · 12/07/2013 20:38

Thanks Belmo, I read your thread with interest and it made me feel much better. It's interesting too the number of babies that are off the top of the chart - quite a number!

I will resolve to continue BFing as often as is requested by DS, and to never darken the HV's door again Grin
