So I'm reading gill rapley's BLW book ahead of DS being 6m in Aug, and she mentions how bf babies are used to a variety of tastes via breast milk & often take well to BLW whereas ff babies can sometimes be more suspicious.

Due to major latch/milk/supply/refusal to latch probs I had to give up what little bf i was doing at 3m & DS has been ff ever since & now I'm worried DS might not take to BLW.

I know I am catastrophising before even crossing the bridge but I shed a lot of tears over being robbed of the convenience of bf & so the thought of doing 100% purées actually makes me want to cry. Especially as when I eventually go back to work my hell-on-earth commute won't give me the time.

I'm sure there are loads of LO's who were ff & breezed through BLW and so I wouldn't mind hearing these sucesses to help me stop this worrying (which I know is silly)

Ds is 15months, was ff and loved food from day one of weaning. By the time he was one he was eating pasta, curries, most veg, most fruit, Sunday dinner etc. He's having a fussy phase atm but since he's eaten so well until now I'm certain that being ff is irrelevant. Don't worry :)

FF from birth here. DD didn't really take to food until 8mo-ish, but tbh most babies I know didn't really take to food until that time. Apart from boys, actually, who seemed to enjoy solid food right from the word go!

I absolutely hated weaning. It felt stressful and it was so, so easy to compare and then get wound up if your baby isn't eating much. But from knocking around on MN for a while it seems that some babies aren't interested in food until 9-10mo and that's still perfectly normal. You really do have to remember that 'food before one is just for fun', though it can seem hard to at the time. As long as they are getting plenty of milk it is ok if they take a few months to work out that food can be a replacement.

We didn't do pure BLW as DD just didn't like it. We did a mix of finger food and purees until she got the hang of food, at which point she wanted to be spoon-fed because she knew that it meant more food and quicker. But she still enjoyed some finger food, and the purees weren't remotely difficult to make, just blended veg with baby pasta, or our spag bol etc whizzed up with a hand blender (they are really handy if you spot one for a fiver).

But on the taste front, despite never having had a taste of breast milk she ate everything. At 18mo she's still not too picky. Anecdotally, she's not been pickier than any of the bf babies I know.

DD was bf, then ff and then mix fed. She is very happy with BLW. We are 4 months down the line and she'll eat everything except carrots Grin

My niece and DS (both 2yo now) were both BLW'd. DS was exclusively bf, DN ff from birth.

DN is a wonderful eater and loves fruit, veggies etc. She's also very disinterested in all the sweets and crap her grandmother offers them both.

DS, on the other hand, has a limited range of foods he'll eat. Mostly beige, apart from the technicolor, e-numbered treats the aforementioned grandmother doles out, which he inhales.

I think it very much depends on the child, rather than feeding methods.

The only thing I will say is that SiL had a bit more of a headache trying to work out formula to food ratios than I did when DN started eating more solids, whereas DS could just have more/less boob as he needed.

DD1 ebf for 6 weeks, mix feed 6-13 weeks then ff. Full and very successful BLW. Aged 5 months 10 days (I know because it was my birthday) she picked the bread up from my plate and started to eat it. By 10/11 months she was eating curry, chili, olives, spaghetti, roast beef dinner. Now 2.8 she will eat anything and friends are always surprised that she sits still at the table until she finishes her plate. I really don't think ff is an issue. Good luck & enjoy

PS if you have carpet & or don't have a dog get a cheap shower curtain to put under the high chair, & get a highchair with a large tray which has a big lip and a top part which comes off to clean

Thank you for hand holding telling me your stories! It has made me feel more positive! (I will leave worrying about food/formula ratios for another day!)

Thanks for the advice too - I'm going to order the ikea highchair as it gets loads of good recommendations on here. For once I'm actually glad we have laminate in our living/dining room as it'll be a lot easier to clean when food undoubtedly flies beyond the splash mat!
