milk supply and hot weather

My boobs have gone a bit mental in the hot weather and seem to be leaking almost constantly - does anyone know if this is just because it is really warm (so perhaps equivalent to being in a warm bath) or if you produce more milk in warm weather (maybe to keep LO hydrated)?

Hi, it's to keep LO hydrated as you'd thought. Offer more feeds in the heat and hopefully it'll alleviate it!

yy hot weather = more milk = more feeding = perfect hydration for DC

MrsLettuce · 08/07/2013 10:23

Adn drink plenty yourself - your body will prioritise hydrating DC over keeping you hydrated.

Ah, would that explain why my boobs are really full at the mo? Been like that a few days, but (12 wk old) lo not all that interested in eating today (but is otherwise her usual self)

MrsMummyP · 08/07/2013 14:05

Same here. Woke up absolutely soaked in the night! Hadn't thought about it being the hot weather as well. Put it down to 12wk injections on Friday which put DD slightly off her food (not as much as last time though), which followed a growth spurt so increased milk production due to that too. Thankfully the bras, bedding and sheets are all dry now thanks to the sunshine!

Thank you so much for this post. I was just coming on here to ask the exact same thing.

My boobs are enormous and full and my 5 week old just wants to graze all day. Obviously thirsty.

gruber · 08/07/2013 14:57

Ah that explains why I leaked all over the bed last night!

As far as I know, it isn't just more milk but also that the milk has a higher water content in hot weather, which is why bf babies don't need to have additional drinks of water. Blimey but breast milk is clever stuff, isn't it?

Hot weather means we have watery milk to hydrate babies. In the cold it'll turn intodouble cream.
