Nasty bite from sleeping baby

DS almost 12 months spends part of the night co-sleeping with us, he usually comes into our bed for a feed about 2am and then we both drift back off whilst he feeds. He will wake a couple more times for feed during the night too.

A couple of nights ago he gave me a little nip while drifting off, i thought nothing of it but last night again as he drifted off he gave me a pretty bad bite. It has drawn blood and left a bit of damage.

Any tips? Is it time to night wean?

Sleepy bites are the worst. I seem to remember the Kellymom website had good advice...

I've had lots of biting, I wish I could give advice. Only sympathy. Whenever my daughter gets a new tooth, she likes to test it out, I honestly think she's just getting use to the re-latch. Her last new tooth coming in was particularly hard for her, as I think she has finally realized it hurts me.

As far as the pain goes, if you can try to feed from the other side as much as you can while it heals. Kellymom does have some good information.

He has only done it once before which was the little nip a few days ago.

I unlatched him when he bite and he was hysterical to go back on so either he wasn't finished or it is somehow a comfort to the teething pain maybe? he just wants to sleep with my breast in his mouth. He is getting 6 teeth all at various stages of erruption though poor mite.

I will check the kelly mom website, thanks.

My dd went through a biting phase that lasted for months, I found it was lots worse when we were feeding lying down as she'd kind of wobble about a bit, roll back, etc. You can learn to recognise when your dc is about to bite and delatch them before but that would involve staying awake and I assume with you feeding lying down, you do that to get your rest as well. Huge sympathies, it hurts anyway but when they draw blood it is agonising. It heals soon enough. I rubbed breast milk in mine and aired it as much as possible and apply lanisoh if you have any lying about from the early days.

Hydrogel pads (store in fridge/freezer) are very soothing and promote healing whilst preventing infection.

Thanks, I will try those pads if I can find some.

Fhdl, the idea was to get some rest, he wakes up so many times in the night but I made a point last night of sitting up, still not sure I was fully awake but managed to pop him off when he finished and he slept in his own cot too that way which is a bonus. Tired today though.
