Breastfed baby poo change along with stalled weight gain

I have written a post not too long ago about my 5mo ds who has had a stall in his weight gain. Just for background, last time i got him weighed it was his 6th week with no weight gain and the two weeks previous to this he has only gained 2ounces.

Anyway, i am now waiting to see a lactation consultant at my local hospital this week, and after getting him checked by the gp am waiting for an appointment with the paediatrician.

In the meantime i am thinking (and stressing) over everything that could possibly be wrong and looking for indications of what is wrong. I have been asked a lot about his nappies and have noticed over the past few weeks that whereas he used to poo approx once a week when he would have a massive poo explosion of loose but relatively thick consistency (which i was always told was normal), he has been pooing slighly more often, maybe 3 times a week, but there isnt much too it and the consistency is very thin, almost watery, although there seems to be quite a lot of it because it sometimes leaks. When i change his nappy though, it is more like a large stain in his nappy which has been absorbed. Could this mean there is something wrong with the quality of the milk he is getting?

If it's very thin, could it be "overflow" round a block? I think that can happen with impacted constipation. Once a week may be within "normal", but doesn't sound very often to me!

Hi renter, thanks for your reply. The gp checked his tummy and said it felt fine - not too sure if they would be able to identify a block this way? And he is very much happy and active in himself, he doesnt indicate any distress or pain.

I have mentioned the once a week thing previously to the hv and various different bf support workers as i was worried it wasnt enough, and they have all said its ok and normal for ebf baby (ive also read online that it is normal). The thicker once a week stuff had me less worried though than this slightly more frequent water poo.

Does it coincide with warmer weather, then, meaning he's feeding more frequently, getting more of the watery foremilk?

Or could it be the incredible dribble of teething? I've recently read a suggestion that "teething nappies" are the result of a gut that's being washed through with the dribble, plus all the crap from the things they're frantically putting in their mouths to teethe on. With the "healthy" gut flora diluted/washed out like this, digestion is poor, and nappies vile.

Does that make sense?

It has been going on a bit longer than the warmer weather, although the most watery nappy was today when he has fed a bit more often because of the heat.

Yeah that does make sense as he dribbles a lot and has been for a while now. Feeling a bit sick with worry about all this.

We've had some vile nappies here with my 5mo twins. Totally rank including green foamy poo, really runny yellow and stringey clumps. Lovely! I think a combo action of the heat and teething (DTD has two lumps on her inner gums today and is in bad form for her - she's normally a sunny little thing). We've also gone from 2 poos a day to 1 a week Back to 8+ now!

Oh, that's a bit better. But do keep an eye on the weight. Smile

Thanks for the reassurance Free, sounds like theres an array of what could be considered normal. Thanks renter, hopefully he will get weighed tomorrow at my appt and i will see where we are then. I have taken pictures of his last couple of nappies to bring, if she really wants to see them or thinks it might help!!

Hurray for nappy examination! It's something non parents simply can't understand. Confused
