Is 10 minutes BF enough per feed for 17 week old boy? He has 3 BF per day and an EXP bottle of 7oz first thing and before bed?

Please advise as so worried he'll loose weight and milk supply will reduce as this may be a partial breast strike in favour for the bottle faster flow even though he's had a bottle of exp milk since week one?????

I think if you want to be sure he gets enough bf then you probably need to do that exclusively. Do you offer more bfs in the day? Could you cut out the am bottle?

What's wrong with 10 minute feeds if baby is feeding, you're offering both/more sides and baby seems satisfied? Babies get much more efficient at feeding as they get older.

So 3 feeds in total or 3 feeds + 2 bottles of expressed milk? 7oz seems like a lot of volume for a BF baby in one go to me but might be wrong on that.

10 mins is plenty. He takes what he needs in that time. These babies become very efficient feeders. We never know how much they take so we have to trust our bodies and our babies. If he is happy and healthy then don't worry.

You're worried he'll lose weight - has he actually lost weight?

If he is doing plenty of wet/dirty nappies, is growing and looking well then carry on. No problems with mixing breast and bottle.
If he's fussing at the breast or not settling to feed then he may be preferring the easy fast flow of a bottle teat & a lot of milk at once. If so you can get teats that make him work harder and lessen the difference in difficulty - these are also a bit better for oral development iirc, more like breast suckling.
If he's not fussing with boob - no worries! Can you have a chat with your hv to ease your anxieties?

TotallyBursar · 05/07/2013 18:08

Sorry, what I meant was - if he's not fussing on the boob and just getting down to the business of feeding for 10 mins then that is fine time wise. Efficient little things they are, especially when there are other things to see and do!

My LO was always an efficient feeder and on average took only 7-8 mins on each side and a total of 15 mins altogether.

As a previous post said, as long as there are plenty of wet and dirty nappies, baby is active and well and putting on weight then I wouldn't worry .

DS - first child - was a slow feeder 45 mins ago so DD has been a bit of a shock as we have days when a ten minute feed is a long one. Admittedly she will then feed at 2-2.5 hourly intervals but she has been seen by paediatricians (about her reflux) who know how quickly she feeds and they havent been concerns as long. As her weight gain is ok.

I've tried cajoling her into long feeds but she isn't interested and won't be persuaded! She is currently 12 weeks and when she sleeps through a normal feed time my breasts feel full so she must be getting milk!

noblegiraffe · 06/07/2013 06:56

If you think he might need more, offer the first side again (or other side if only one side). If he's hungry he'll have some more. If not, he won't!

DoodleAlley · 06/07/2013 06:56

Forgot to add that of she has a day of particularly short feeds I will sometimes respond by putting her back on the same breast so she doesn't just get fore milk all day.
