16 Week old wakes screaming with trapped wind and screams during Breastfeeding...what works best for wind?

Hi ladies, what works best for trapped wind as he arches back and squirms at the breast but not for his exp breast milk via the bottle so not sure what product is best to give for all types of feed. He gets exp milk just before bed so maybe there is a delay in the wind from a bottle causing him grief and that's when he wakes up screaming or grunting? This has only started in the past 10 days at night but for past 4 weeks for breastfeeding so at my wits end?
We've explored all other possible causes for the crying and arching at the breast as we originally ruled out wind as he didn't have this behavior at the bottle but now not so sure...please help as all thoughts much appreciated :)

Try gripe water. My 6 month old has terrible wind and as soon as I give her some and then rub her back out come a number of burps! I did try Infacol but was useless probably because I forgot to give DD before EVERY feed!

Also keep babys back straight when burping. Have you checked babys latch to ensure his seal is tight around your nipple?

DD's wind has recently got a lot worse whereby I can be burping h upto half an hour. When I asked HV about she just said some babies are just very windy. Very helpful HV!

Thanks Picnicpie...I've heard of gripe water but know it's not available in Ireland...why is that...what's the issue? Also if used properly is infacal as good does anyone know?

Infacol and Dentinox worked reasonably for us and were easy to give, but: 1) can worsen reflux which it did for our DS, and 2) quite expensive if you're using regularly.

Apparently, gripe water was removed from the shelves in Ireland due to having alcohol in it which was later removed. No idea if that's actually what happened as I'm not in Ireland, but it's what I was told. Apparently there are some independent chemists here and there in Ireland that stock it (it no longer has alcohol). We use Woodward's by adding it to DS' bottle and it worked a treat, huge difference.

Would it be possible to buy online, eg Amazon, eBay, Express Chemist...? I've heard of people ordering it from Amazon to a UK address and then having it redirected to a local collection point or something crazy like that, so I don't know if that means that they don't normally deliver it within Ireland.

NB: I'm not saying you absolutely must use gripe water, just that if you can get some it's great stuff!

Oh also for other methods that can help:

Bicycle legs, tummy massage, bringing legs up to chest, regular burping throughout feeds, other bottles can be better for some people (eg Dr Browns), ensuring bottle teat is filled with milk whilst feeding, checking your diet can sometimes find a solution - a friend reduced (but did not exclude) dairy and her DD's digestion/wind situation improved a lot.

Agree with the checking of your own diet. But it does get better eventually. Keep up the good work Smile
