Hi
First time of using pump today, and expressed for an hour and only got 2ozs of milk. Is this normal?
Any advice on how I can express more milk or quicker please?
I plan to express every day, will this speed up expressing?
Thank you

I never cracked pumping between feeds because my LO was a hungry wee thing and always seemed to want feeding as soon as I'd finished pumping. But she'd never take a full feed during the night and as I was up anyway I'd go through and express what was left. Usually got 4oz then. Then I'd try after first morning feed.

Someone who's more experienced with be along to help hopefully.

I pumped for months after going back to work.
It is normal to only get a bit to start with. Have you tried other pumps?
I found I got more with my double medela ( one that comes in a rucksack, forget name) than another make my friend leant me.
Also I got more in the mornings and if you pump at the same time every day your body will adjust and expect it, just as it does with baby.
After morning shower supposed to be good.
Try pumping one side with baby on other, helps some people but I found there wasn't room for DD and pump!
Or looking at a picture, or watching a video recording of them feeding, smelling worn baby grow ect helps.
Don't express for ages, better to stop and have a break and pump again rather than do one long pumping session.

I'm a maternity nurse and most of the mums I work with chose to express. This is the plan I use:

First feed of the day baby feeds one side and other side is expressed either before or after the baby feeding. If baby is still hungry then they go onto the side that has been expressed.

Second feed of the day alternate what happened with first feed.

I never get the mums to go over 15 mins of expressing and if they are in pain or the milk stops flowing then they stop sooner. I also get them to do compressions and relax as much as possible. Sometimes it is only a small amount to begin with but will build up. Doing the two morning expressing is usually enough for more than one feed, so we freeze the excess.

Most of the mothers I work with then use the EBM in the late evening so I will get them to express then as well. Eg I usually give the EBM between 10-11pm and get the mum to express both sides at 9.30pm then she can go to sleep until the babies middle of night feed.

Sometimes the mums have chosen for me to do middle of night feed so I usually recommend that they set an alarm and express both sides at 3amish until 6 weeks and then can start stopping.

Or I have mums that give a top up or full feed of EBM at the bedtime feed in which case they will express around 7pmish.

I think the key is to relax and take it slowly, the mums I've worked with have had good results with the swing but make sure all the connections are snug so you get good suction.

Thank you so much mrswishywashy. I'm going to try again in a little while to express some more milk. Its a bit difficult to express in the mornings at the moment as my older son is around, but he's going away for 2 weeks at the end of July so I'll have a couple of weeks to really practise.
I'm still trying to sort out bf little one and struggling a bit to be honest, but going to bf clinic next week, so hopefully they'll be able to help.
I've cut and pasted your information into a file on my computer so I can refer to it in a couple of weeks.
Thank you so much x

Express at the same time each day to build up supply at that time. Hot shower or jot waterbortle plus massage before expressing always helped me.

I also was advised never to do more than 15 minutes.

I also found making sure flange on pump is the correct size made a massive difference. See guide on medals website.
