Green Poo - cause?

I know the jury is out on the fore milk hind milk being true or not but DD (16days old) has been feeding well and yet we habe green poop.

Have had issues with projectile vomits after feeds and so today I let her latch herself (badly in my opinion!) But she took much much less nipple and although not painful as such I can see it becoming so - she wasn't sick though so can only assume she takes less air that way?

Thoughts very welcome :-)

Could possibly be too much dairy in your diet. I had a short phase of this with ds. I wasn't sure if it were the dairy or not enough hind milk. I decided it might be both and tried cutting down a bit on the dairy (I do eat rather a lot of it) and trying to ensure ds had a good long feed each time. I would also start each feed with the boob he fed from last just to make sure he's emptied it iyswim. Then swapped him to the other. (Mind you part of that was also a massive desire to avoid mastitis).

Course, if dd is not latching properly it is more likely to be the hind milk issue. Have you tried varying positions? My best one is lying side by side.

Green poo absolutley normal at that stage. As long as LO is eating well, pooing and seems happy just carry on!

Hi redwelly, I tend to have to burp my DS 2 or 3 times per feed, otherwise he's prone to throwing up the whole feed. I also tend to block feed (same breast 2 feeds) both because of oversupply and if I don't he gets green poos. Ymmv of course but maybe that helps.

How many green poos? All poos green or just one or two? Any other symptoms?

One green poo with nothing else amiss is no problem.

Every poo green, frothy and smelly with a baby who is showing other signs of discomfort needs investigating.

Hi,
I've breastfed 3 dc and all of them have experienced this. IMO it was either when they overfed or if they only got the fore milk. As long as they are otherwise well then it is normal every so often.

Be prepared that your dd may also go a week or more without pooing, again totally normal as long as she is otherwise well and you still get plenty of wet nappies.

Enjoy your dd 😄

We have just gone through a spell of green poos. DD is 5.5 months old and went from poo-ing about every 2 days to about 5 times a day of green! Just as I was about to take her to the doctors it resolved itself and she is back to normal and goes about once a day. She doesn't vomit and is breastfed with about 2 bottles of formula a week. I had read somewhere it can be connected with teething and excess saliva entering the digestive system. Not sure if this was the cause for my DD but also a lot of hand-chewing and nappy rash at the same time.

HTH.

I thought green poo in a young breast fed baby was normal. Well all three of mine had it...
