Baby clamping down on breast nearing end of feed

DS1 has started to clamp down with his gums and wriggle and fuss after about 5 minutes (which is usually about the time he stops feeding). I have tried to offer second breast but he then refuses but when taken off as upset and it takes a while to calm him down.

He has always fed only on one side (he is 11 weeks) and feeds approx ever 2-3 hours during the day and goes one long stretch at night 9-5 ish

At last weigh in they were only slightly concerned about drop of a whole centime but asked that I came back in 4 weeks just to make sure he was sustaining and not dropping further. This has coincided with my breasts feeling less full but I was quite reassured after looking on Kelly mom until now.

So finally my question/s are does this clamping down mean no milk left? If so why won't he take the other breast? If not what can I do to ensure better weight gain. I want to feed for another couple of months at least.

You could always ring the National Bfing Helpline tonight, you don't have to wait until the Support Group next meets Smile

Hopefully this will bump for you too Smile

Does he poo/burp after stopping feeding? When DD does this it tends to be when she's about to do a poo, it's like she loses concentration because she's focusing on filling her nappy! Could it be wind bothering him?

Thanks jilted.

Josie he does tend to poo or have wind when he does this and I have felt it was a concentration issue but because he then doesn't go back to feeding I have started to wonder if I've run out if milk on that one if you see what I mean.

Today I have tried to offer second breast each time but once interrupted he is reluctant to feed again.

Im not too worried at the moment as he seems to be thriving I am going to continue to offer second breast and try to feed more through the day to boost supply if needed. I just wondered if clamping down was a sign that the breast was empty. I will ring for support if this continues into next week and/or see someone at the local group.

My DD does this when she needs to burp or pass wind although she will go straight back on so I can't help with that. But maybe he's had his fill?
