FF 14wo suddenly screaming and astonishingly windy, lactose intolerant or recent diarrhoea to blame?

Poor little DD had the most astonishing attack of diarrhoea at the weekend, it just exploded out of her and went everywhere.

Since then she has developed appalling wind. Burps and farts!! So loud and smelly I had to apologise to a woman in a shop queue. More importantly she is often in awful pain especially during feeds, screaming and drawing up her knees until a huge belch or fart (often with follow through of very very squidgy pop) comes out.

I know that true lactose intolerance is rare and this foes seem to have followed directly on from the diarrhoea incident so could it be the diarrhoea that is making her struggle to digest milk now? And if so what can I do?? She is in such pain and it is very hard to get her to feed a lot of the time.

Thinking of going to the Gp to see what they say... Might I need lactose free milk? I don't want to switch if it isn't necc as DD is a fussy eater at the best of times...

Any advice would be great as I am at the end of my tether after 5 days of the screaming and terrible wind/ nappy contents. She is not passing diarrhoea now, it was just one day, but her nappies are often pretty bad and exploding out the sides!!

it is very unlikely to be lactose intolerance, as you say this is v rare.

it could however be cows milk protein intolerance. I have read that this can occur temporarily following a stomach upset so it's possible this is what's happening. hopefully it will pass soon if so.

unfortunately the special formulas for cmpi (nutrimagen and neocate) are foul tasting and also ££ and not as nutritious as normal formula so I wouldn't switch except on medical advice.

I think it's worth going to the GP to see what they say. I suspect they may say wait and see if it improves next week though... In the meantime try tummy massage (clockwise circles and bicycling her legs) to help clear out the wind and poo, especially just before a feed so that she's not putting more milk on top of an already windy tummy iyswim. I expect you're doing this already though.

Mini pie thank you, that is v sensible advice! I haven't been doing massage and leg bicycling actually... Bad mummy alert Blush I will certainly do this tomorrow!
I didn't know cows milk protein intolerance could occur as a temp reaction to a stomach upset but it sounds intuitively right...
Am definitely going to Gp as I would just like some reassurance that it is something minor as the screams and crying can be so intense I feel like she is about to erupt. I know how painful a bad tummy can feel though as I have IBS. Must be a horrible sensation for a baby.

Yes poor mite! they might ask for a stool sample to analyse though my GP would only do that after 2 weeks of diarrhoea.

I used to give my son goats milk tempoarily following stomach upset. It seemed to o the trick.

IBS in adults is thought to be linked to undiagnosed cmpi as a child. You may have had it when younger and cmpi has a strong genetic link. Its basically the bodies immune system trying to fight off a bodily fluid from another species. You say dd has always fussed at feeds? She may well have been developing cmpi for a while. It is the damage from untreated cmpi that can cause a secondary, temporary, lactose intolerance due to gut damage. True lactose intolerance is rare but the secondary form is not. She may be okay on a partially broken down or hydrolysed form of cows milk formula or she may require an entirely synthetic amino acid type until her body outgrows intolerance to milk which can take up to three years or so.

Thanks so much everyone...
Poppet I have PMd you... Hope that is ok!

Gp was astonishingly dismissive the other day and didn't even listen to my questions!! Asked if I was a first time mum and then told me it was just because I wasn't burping DD properly...
