Treating thrush - have I got the right stuff?

I posted yesterday about pain when feeding, and thanks to the responses got a prescription today to treat thrush. I've read about needing Nystatin as LO is only 4 weeks old, but we've been given daktarin as an oral gel for LO and a cream for me. Is it the same stuff? The gel says not for under 4 months, but the doctor said they do use it so I assume it'll work...

I've got basically no info about how to use it though - I'm OK with the gel, twice a day rubbed around his mouth. What about the cream? I should have asked the doctor but was so spaced out and tired I failed miserably. Do I need to wash it off before feeding? Is using it twice a day enough? How long do I need to keep using it for? The label just says "complete the course of treatment" but doesn't say how long that it Hmm

Sorry for all the questions, and thanks for any advice :)

I had the same problem a few months ago and would applied the antifungal cream after my DD had fed so there was no problem with her coming into contact with it as was not sure whether it was safe. Did also give a wipe before she fed as well to be extra sure. And from what I remember I applied it 3-4 Times per day. In the end though it was only the oral tablet which got rid of it for me so don't put up with it for too long.

Hope it clears up soon, it's horrible and you have my sympathies

Thanks - I'll give that a go and see what happens. Fingers crossed it gets less painful soon!

Daktarin is apparently more effective than Nystatin (different antifungal), so you've got the right stuff there. As sweetness says, gel in baby's mouth, cream on your nips 3/4 times a day, and do the cream after a feed. You need to keep using it for a few days after the symptoms stop to make sure everything's gone and avoid reinfection (see also changing bra pads, hot-washing bras, etc.). Also if your symptoms persist you may need the oral treatment as well.

And yes, the only reason the gel is not licensed for small babies is because some eejits were putting lumps of gel into their mouths, making it a choking hazard - if you just rub a bit round as directed it's perfectly safe.

Thanks leedy that's reassuring. LO is being very fussy during feeds today, which I assume is connected, so hopefully the gel will help quickly so we can get back to normal.
