Hi..
My lovely boy was diagnosed with DS at birth and we need as much information u would provide us with.He is hypotonic..but is doing well and might be discharged tomoro.Mine was a low risk case of 1:8800 and I had abt 10 scan for different problems in abt 9 mths but when repeated, it always.come back.as normal...but I had my suspicion that this was going to be a different baby though I wasnt informed by any healthcare staff..its about a week now and we are taking each day slowly..any advice and life story abt DS would be greatly appreciated...thank you

bumping for you, you are certainly not alone in not finding out until post birth x

Hi there is a special needs children part of the site which will have people with experience of this, might get better experienced replies I would post there. Good luck xx

Hi babedestiny, congratulations on the birth of your baby boy. I have no experience of Down's syndrome but you may find it helpful to post in the special needs children section there are a lot of knowledgable posters there who give great advice.

Hi congratulations on your son. I'm sorry I have no experience to offer but I'm sure you will get plenty of great advice on here.

Congratulations on your lovely baby. My friend's son was also diagnosed at birth and I know it was a massive shock for them and a very difficult time. He's doing really well now - he's at school (mainstream), he has lots of friends and he does lots of different activities.

I hope you have some supportive people around you. I know that my friend found a special needs group at a children's centre helpful, and also the Down's syndrome charity. Maybe your nurse or health visitor could point you towards some support.

Congratulations on your beautiful boy. My cousin has a lovely little boy with DS. He is a gorgeous boy and has won all of our hearts! I won't tell you my cousin's life has been easy with him but I think, despite that, she wouldn't swap him and neither would any of us.

My friends DS was diagnosed with DS a couple of days after birth. He is the most beautiful, happy, fantastic child I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He really is wonderful. And though times have been hard with him with other health issues (not that you'd know it with my friends laid back attitude), the good times are so worth it.
He's even turned his hand to TV and model work to raise awareness.

Can you look in to some local support groups? I know my friend has raised money for DSA because she's found them helpful.

Cogratulations on your baby boy!

DS2 doesn't have Down Syndrome, but when the screening test gave a high risk result I found some really good blogs that made me feel more informed and positive.

These two are by parents whose babies were diagnosed at birth:
