Another Gaviscon/ff question...

Hi

Yesterday DD was prescribed Gaviscon for reflux.

She can have up to six doses in 24 hours. She is FF and feeds irregular which means she might have more than 6 feeds in24 hours. (Feeds between every 2 to 4 hours)

In your experience will DD be sick after a feed which has not got Gavisvon in it ?

If you little one has Gavison have you found that feeding routine settles down into a patten? I don't know whether she is having short gaps between feeds as she has been so sick and brought a lot of milk back.

Also was your little one unsettled after a feed containing Gaviscon?

Thank you

My ds2 had reflux and was on gaviscon.

You'll probably find that the feeds become less frequent as bottles getting bigger and vomiting eases. Ds had gaviscon in every bottle - even if he had 7 that's day. Follow the advice your doctor have you not the packet instructions.

Thank you for your advice.

I thought it was in every feed but the sticker the pharmacist put on the box says no more than six in24 hours. Will check with Gp

How many sachets are you using?

DD was prescribed two sachets in every bottle- she was sick without them.

Rico08 · 07/06/2013 09:25

She has 120ml formula and 1 sachet of gaviscon.

She has not had a bottle without gaviscon since we were prescribed it yesterday.

She has been so much better, only a little sick when she brings wind up.

How old is she?

DD2 was four months old when she had two sachets in every bottle... I think she was drinking about 5oz by then. I can't remember the amount, but I would give the GP a ring, as I'm sure it's fine to put a sachet in every bottle. It makes no sense to give her a bottle without.

Does she drink the whole 120ml?

Rico08 · 07/06/2013 11:56

She is 4 weeks old and does drink the full 120ml.

I thought it seemed silly to not have it in every feed asi think the gavison acts as a barrier to stop the sick

For what's its worth I only put 1 sachet in for less than 7oz bottle two for 8oz as per instructions. But I did put it in every feed and the projectile sick stopped.

I also propped up mattress a little so Ds was never laud complete flat and also gave him 20 mins at an angle in my arms before putting down.

He stopped vomiting and the wind settled.

Also used infacol before feeds.

He couldn't lie flat in a pram as the motion would make him sick no matter how long it had been since feed. Reflux babies are better raised up. Helps with wind problems too.

Get bigger teats for bottles too. The gaviscon thickens the formula so the wind could be caused by sucking too hard to get the milk.

May cough and splutter first time you up the teats but within a couple of feeds they will get used to the flow.

If she is irregular feeding put half a sachet in each feed.

This is what our consultant pead got us to do as dd was also all over the place.

If she feeds 2/4 hourly you would be best trying to get in the habit of little and often so 3 hourly.

We are reflux pros in this household dd is 5 months andhas bbeen through every test and every medication out there

humptynumptyfall · 07/06/2013 21:11

Ps dont get bigger teats as wind will make her worse from too faster flow.

Use a sterile needle to make the slow teat a tiny bit bigger only tiny though
