Tongue tie in five day old ebb

Yawner247 · 06/06/2013 22:22

So today the midwife visited and said that my lil baby has a slight tongue tie. She said professionally she should say its fine but said she would get it clipped as it can lead to speech problems...so I thought I'd ask the experts....any advice or info would be greatly appreciated!! GrinGrin I have a few latch issues on one side but weight gain is good so far and he seems comfy when feeding but takes quite a while on each breast!

Get it snipped. Sooner rather than later. That's my professional and personal advice. Ask your GP/midwife/HV/BF supporter/whoever is willing to help to give you a referral to a tongue tie clinic if it's not causing you too much pain and problems. If it's causing you lots of pain and your DS is sturggling to feed then you can pay someone to come to you and do it at home straight away.

I support lots of mums to BF and have only once seen a tongue tie which caused no problems with BFing.

My DS (8 weeks) had a tongue tie. I had it snipped on day 1. I paid a lactation consultant to come to my house and do it because I wasn't waiting for a referral.

Whether or not TT really does affect speech is up for debate but waiting to find out it does and then having it snipped when he's 3 or 4 is a much more complex, difficult and unpleasant procedure than having it done now whilst he's tiny. It's literally snipped with a pair of one use scissors, a tiny bit of blood, couple of days to scab over and heal and then (hopefully) no more problems.

Hope you get sorted soon.

Thanks for the speedy response my midwife has referred me she has been so lovely I only have problems on one side when he feeds is this normal for a TT or would it be both sides affected?!

I'm in similar position, 6wk old with try just diagnosed by a bf counsellor (and concurring second opinion). We had no problems until about week 3 when I got thrush, and then a blocked duct last week, apparently commonly related. Since about week 3/4 DD has also been making slurping noises when feeding which makes my nipples quite sore and means she's taking air in. I'm waiting for a referral to have it snipped too. So IME the problems don't start straight away and maybe best to have it done before any do in case you can head them off.

Should read 'with tt'.

stickybean · 10/06/2013 04:16

If you're on facebook join the tongue tie babies support group. You'll get lots of info there from very knowledgable people.

My DS had a TT which was snipped when he was around 8 weeks old. Like philbee we didn't have any problems initially and he was gaining weight. It was a few weeks down the line when it started to cause me some pain and I realised that he was feeding for very short periods of time but very frequently.

The difference after his TT was snipped was amazing - he fed better, was more content after a feed and so slept better. Plus no more discomfort for me. I honestly don't think I'd still be breastfeeding him 11 months later if it hadn't been done. If I were in your shoes I'd get it snipped now. It really is a straightforward procedure and from my experience makes a world of difference. Good luck.

I would get it snipped. We had the same decision to make a few weeks ago and chose to snip, ds did not even notice the cut just went back to sleep. I was worried about possible speech problems later and only had slight latch issues but noticed after the snip feeding was much easier so it must have had an impact on feeding.

Oblomov · 10/06/2013 07:51

I would definitley get it snipped. I did with ds2. It is minimal pain, for one second, and then they -breast-feed straight away. Such a good thing. I have yet to meet anyone who ever regretted having the TT snipped.

McBaby · 10/06/2013 10:02

Get it cut or assesed by TT surgeon we had great weight gain but latch issues and my pain got worse and worse!

Plus my slight tongue tie turned out to be severe posterior tongue tie.

mawbroon · 10/06/2013 10:16

YY get it revised.

We are dealing with the consequences of untreated tongue tie with ds1 who is now 7yo.

The braces to correct his orofacial structure, are £££££ and may well have been prevented had I known then what I know now.

philbee · 10/06/2013 14:32

We are booked to have DD's snipped tomorrow, so hoping they will go ahead and do it.

Yawner247 · 11/06/2013 23:04

Thanks for your replies....the health visitor wasn't too concerned as she says he's gaining weight and feeding well...despite me saying the latch on is causing me pain...I have a high pain threshold too! The referral has been made by the midwife and we are awaiting an appointment...she's referred us under problems with feeding but am concerned that they won't snip it as he is gaining weight and is content after feeding!!!

DD was gaining weight and not distressed after feeding, and they snipped it yesterday. I think they are concerned about bein able to sustain bfing, so if it's causing you problems that's a concern. I had various mws and GPs dismiss my concerns too, and I wasn't in particular pain with feeding, just soreness after, thrush, blocked ducts etc. I chased the referral and it was fairly quick but they have 3 clinics a week there. Do you know when you'll get an appointment?

Yawner247 · 12/06/2013 22:04

Hey philbee I received our appointment today 18th June...not sure if its just to have it looked at and arrange a snip day or if we will go And have it looked at and snipped at the same time not sure how it works at Nottingham seeing the midwife Tomo so will ask her again!

My friend is a paed and when I had my third child last oct I had no probs b'feeding and TT wasn't severe.
However I went to dental oral surgeon when baby was nearly 4 mths after a girl in a baby group said she had a tongue tie and had to thro years of speech therapy. I know that probbwouldnt have occurred to my Lille baby boy but my husband and I thought why take the risk ....

Dental oral surgeon did it and only took a second and baby didn't even cry !!!!!
Def get TT cut would be my advice x
