nipple shields

baby is 5 days old. went to bf clinic yesterday and her latch seems much better but nipples have been damaged and if i don't get her on just right it is really painful.

have tried nipple shields today just to give them a chance to heal but they are so long i find it really difficult to get them in her mouth with a decent latch, she seems to be knowing on the base of the nipple rather than on the breast tissue (as she does without). any advise?

thanks.
I have managed to feed on both sides this evening without the shields and without pain. Saw a picture suggesting trying to get the breast under the nipple into her mouth first and that seems a bit better, plus have switched to rugby ball hold. I think we both get frustrated when it takes several goes to latch properly.

yes heavy use of lansinoh and putting expressed milk on the nipple. Difficult to say how damaged, looks bad to me but suspect others could have it alot worse. will try to reserve the shields for occasional use but they are a faff, she waves her arms about & knocks them off plus they seem.so long!

Ask your midwife for jellonet. It's like gauze soaked in a Vaseline type goo and it is amazing. Healed my nipples overnight.
Keep it in fridge too.
Am sure it's called jellonet. Hang on will google....

Yes jelonetbwnd dressing. Seems you can buy it on amazon too but my mw always had some in her bag.
I used it with both mine at the start, you cut squares of it out.
Don't wear anything decent tho as it stains.

doing better today. no nipple pain on feeding though they do still look a bit misshapen & elongated when she comes off. might pop back to clinic tomorrow.

thanks again wouldbe.
i had major problems feeding DD1. thought all was well, no pain etc just very long frequent feeds but you read to expect that. But she had awful weight gain (7lb11 to 8lb at 6 weeks). i was on domperidone and spent all my time from weeks 4-6 either feeding or pumping. It was miserable. All fixed by starting combination feeding are 6 weeks.
so I am really paranoid about trying to get it right this time. so far so good. It actually feels very different feeding DD2 and she is much more efficient and settled so I'm hoping their are good signs.
