SIL has a 5 day old new baby and is in the depths of exhaustion as she's trying very hard to establish bf. I'm going to see her tomorrow and need some advice as to the best food and drink to take for her to help her feed herself quickly, nutritionally and with the minimum of effort. It's a couple of years since I was bf a newborn and although I remember those early days of being tied to the settee, I can't remember how I got my nourishment (although there seemed to have been a lot of porridge...?) Anyway, all suggestions gratefully received. Thank you.

I used to have stashes of dried fruit, nuts (almonds, walnuts etc rather than peanuts), crackers, chunks of cheese, Marmite sarnies, bananas etc. Picnic food, basically, that could be eaten one-handed. Particularly useful in the middle of the night when I got the breastfeeding munchies!

Maybe take her some roast chicken legs or naice chipolatas?

Things that can be easily eaten with one hand!

Pasties come to mind. Scotch eggs. Breastfeeding cookies (google that and you'll get a recipe) have oats so aren't just a pure sugar hit. Babybel cheeses.

Flapjack was a winner with me

A big one for me was food served in a large deep bowl which could be eaten with a fork alone. Mac and cheese was excellent. Spag Bol with pasta shapes rather than spag. Nothing too runny.

Cereal bars are good. Apples, satsumas, bananas I imagine

Chocolate or chocolate biscuits or cake - that did me nicely Grin

Flapjacks! I'm also a big fan of those Nakd bar things that are basically squashed-up dates and nuts: they are genius as a snack in the early days. Filling, nutritious, can be eaten with one hand, and can be stuffed into handbags and pockets for those OH GOD I NEED TO EAT RIGHT NOW moments.

Thank you to everyone for your replies. I saw my SIL yesterday and she was absolutely thrilled with the stash of cereal bars, flapjacks, yoghurts, dried fruit and nuts recommended by you all! Many thanks.

lots and lots of water. Ideally in a sports cap bottle so you don't spill it everywhere. So so thirsty all the time
