EBF 14wk old seemingly dropping percentiles drastically

DS was 8lb5oz at birth. He lost quite a lot of weight in the first week due to severe jaundice, but then caught it back up again, although he never quite got back onto the same percentile.

I've just weighed him again (first time in a few weeks) and he's apparently dropped from around the 78th %ile to the 48th (this is using WHO values for breastfed babies).

He's EBF (every 2.5/3hrs). He has lots of wet/dirty nappies, seems energetic, and is definitely growing out of clothes. He does have reflux and brings up at least part of every feed, but it doesn't seem to bother him.

Is this a concern? What do I do?

rock how are you weighing him?

Are you doing this yourself?

How sure are you this is accurate?

The centile lines on the charts don't have 78th or a 48th....which chart are you using?

There's not really sufficient info in your post to say whether your baby's growth is normal for sure - but there's nothing there to suggest anything concerning.

What does your HV say?

Thanks - glad I'm prob just overreacting.

I'm weighing him on our scales (so realise it's not totally accurate). The values are from a website which claims to calculate percentiles based on WHO data. He has a 4m check-up next week so I'll double check opinion then. I wasn't bothered about weighing him since he seemed to be growing just fine, but then a friend told me her baby's weight so I thought I'd compare DS and was surprised at how low it was: much lower than I'd expected.

You mean your own bathroom scales???? Erm.....dead right! Not accurate at all! Bathroom scales don't weigh accurately in small increments at all

You can't possibly get a proper picture of your baby's weight on bathroom scales, or even kitchen scales.

Forget about his weight and just get him 'done' at the clinic :)

I mean get his weight done at the clinic.

lurcherlover · 02/06/2013 19:36

Your bathroom scales are never going to do it! Digital kitchen scales would be closer but still not accurate. Medical scales are properly calibrated. Get him done at a clinic and take his red book so they can check the centile with you. He doesn't sound like a sickly baby from your description though!

I wouldn't worry. Sounds good to me. My dd was born on the 25th centile (a twin) and dropped to the 2nd centile by about 6mo. They got worried about her, but she was beautifully chubby, happy and developing well. She is just petite and she still is, aged 4. All my kids were heavier birth weights than they have turned out. They are very active children, unlike my niece, who was fed in exactly the same way but is a lot less energetic plus is just 'bigger'. It's mostly just genetics I think.

rockerrock · 02/06/2013 20:10

[hides face shamefully] yes, bathroom scales....

Both DH and myself are naturally slender and his older sister is on the 3rd, so he's genetically never going to be big! We've just had a very stressful week with him healthwise in other respects, so I saw the numbers and panicked!! Thank you for the reassurance, and I will now wait patiently until my doctor's appointment this week :)
