How long do you breast feed for in the night?

My 6 week old and I are typically awake 1.5-2 hrs for the two night (early hours) wakings. She has reflux, so I do have to wind her extra. She feeds for about 40-60 mins ans is wide awake (not crying). Sometimes she has wind discomfort but other times she sits there awake, content, but awake and I'm desperately trying not to fall asleep and drop her (like right now).

I hear of 'dream feeds' but dont understand how to do this. DD wakes naturally to feed (not usually crying) but is definitely awake.

I should add that once she goes to sleep in the evening it's usually (so far) for 3.5-5hrs (starting anywhere from 8-11pm.

So how long do you BF fircinbthe night and how long are you awake?

Pretty much the same as you by the sounds of things Smile

DS2 (3wo) was asleep by 8.30 last night and went thru till 1am, back to bed by 2am and awake again at 4am. Is flat out on my shoulder now but by the looks of all the squirming that's going on he has a belly full of wind so we won't be going back to bed just yet Hmm

DS1 (2yo) will be up in an hour or so Confused

I'm afraid that sounds quite normal with a 6 week old. Ime dream feeding doesn't really start until they're about 4-6mths old. It's where you pick them up and feed when they're asleep still - so ds2 goes to bed by 6.30pm, when O go to bed at 11pm I give him a quick dream feed then.

Ds2 is now 12mths and I'm up 1-3 times in the night and each time prob a total of 10-15mins - he's v efficient feeder now and takes about 5nins per side and doesn't need winding.

Stick in there - it does get a lot easier Smile

With ds, I would feed for around thirty mins, sleep for 90, feed for 30, sleep for 90, feed for 30, sleep for 90 etc etc. he was the same round the clock (without the sleeping). Sometimes he'd change it up and be feeding for an hour and sleep for an hour. Joy.

I have to say that eventually I fed the child and then handed him over to dh and went back to sleep. You don't need tits to wind, change and settle.

At six weeks old, god, he could literally feed all night. One boob, 30 mins, come off, eyes closed for 5 mins, then do an almighty poo, change, second boob for 30 mins, repeat ad infinitum. By twelve weeks however it was a lot more liveable :)
