Advice on supply and missing a night feed

I was wondering if any if you had some advice for me re:supply if I drop a night feed. I have been bf my son for just shy of 12 weeks now - it has been a bit of a rocky road with lots of expressing and pain in the beginning (he was a tad early and jaundiced and would not suckle at first) and then some very exhausting times as he has fed pretty much constantly since then and is quite slow!

The positives are that he is gaining really well and looks a healthy little baby. I also genuinely enjoy the feeling that I am nurturing him in this way. But he is still small (was 5lbs - now around 9lbs) and feeds every 2 hours through the night. Sometimes we are up for an hour and I am truly exhausted after almost 3 months of this.

A few weeks ago DH started doing a night feed for me with expressed milk however then we sort of stopped as didn't have a routine and expressing was getting to be hard work as I don't get a huge amount and have to do 2 sessions to get enough for a feed. I am now trying to introduce more of a routine and DH is doing a feed ideally around 11.30 to midnight if I can get DS to sleep at the right moment!! He sometimes doesn't take much at this feed but tonight he took just shy of 6 ounces. This is 3 pumping sessions for me (I pump after feeds for 10 mins) and I don't usually do more than 2 sessions.

Anyway I am beginning to ramble .... I was struggling to cope with life when doing it all myself. With DH's help I feel so much better as I can usually get about 4hours sleep and then a couple more here and there. I have give from from considering formula just so I could sleep more (DH could help) to feeling much happier and enjoying my baby more after just 3 night with 4hour stints.

Posted to soon!

The problem is I am worrying about pumping enough (I may struggle tomorrow as out during the day) and am considering introducing the odd formula feed just so that I am able to have that assistance even if I haven't pumped enough that day. I am hoping that most days I would not need to and that this would be an occasional thing.

If DS starts to go a bit longer between feeds in the future and I could get some sleep I would happily do all the feeds myself .... If I do introduce the odd formula feed and then want to up supply again to do it all myself when hopefully night waking a reduce slightly is this going to be possible and have any of you done anything similar?

As a side note DS will tolerate formula as we were sent home hospital topping up with it although we worked hard to get off it and he has been ebf f

Dear god I did it again! Apologies. Was going to end by saying I don't particularly want to mix feed even if it is only once r twice per week but on the other hand was getting so tired that I was struggling to cope as considering giving up bf just so I could hand over to DH for a night here and there!

Anyway and experiences in doing similar or thoughts on supply and if I could increase it again at some point in the future would be much appreciated! : )

Ruddy I miss night feeds and haven't noticed any problems with supply, although baby does tend to have lots of cluster feeding sessions so maybe they are keeping it balanced.

Thanks user .... you saved me from replying to my own thread for a 4th time to bump it!! I really rely on DH doing a Feed but after all the hard work to get to this far don't want to mess up supply.

Hi I did exactly this- DH did the midnight feed. Totally didn't want to give formula. But I was cracking up.
And that was week 3. You have managed 3 months- you are one tough cookie!

It's more important for your baby to have you at 100% compared to 100% bf.

There is no right & wrong, just what you feel is best. Smile

Thanks milk tray - I have started taking fenugreek and been eating porridge for breakfast and am so far getting more out when I express so am hoping this will continue!

Well my baby is 6 weeks and has had a bottle of formula once a day since week 1 and I have an oversupply so think it will be fine if navy feeds well other times and reasonably frequently. Agree it keeps me sane!
