third night for baby James and if anyone is up could do with some reassurance/advice. yesterday I was worried he wasn't feeding enough (very sleepy but had a few long feeds) he's had more today but pretty sure latch is wrong. I know the theory, have read the books, watched the videos...but can't seem to get him to take quite enough breast (i think that's it as it's rather pinchy).anyway tonight, he wants to be on my breast constantly. he falls asleep before long but carries on feeding. I take him off and gently lay him down but only seem to get twenty mins before he's awake and crying again Sad there's a breastfeeding group I'm going to tomorrow but any ideas for tonight?

If he's still feeding in his sleep, let him

LongNeckedDancers · 29/05/2013 01:40

If he not feeding properly then you might be getting in to that cycle of him being too tired to feed properly but not full enough to have a good sleep! Having said that he is still brand new so go easy on yourself! Get someone to check latch. I have an 8 week old in room with me ()not mine () and sometimes nappy change mid feed to wake up a bit.

Hello, congratulations :)

On the latch, you can try stroking your nipple over his top lip, wait for him to open wide and then get as much boob in as possible. You can also use your finger to gently flip his bottom lip down into e sort of 'fishy' mouth shape.

Regarding wanting to feed all the time, that's totally normal and good for this stage, he's doing that or comfort and to get your milk supply going. Are you getting wet and soiled nappies? That's a good sign at this age that he's getting enough.

Hang in there, it's overwhelming in the early days, especially at night x

You can tickle his feet and ears, blow in his face to keep him awake until he finishes his feed and is content. Hopefully he might sleep a little longer then. If not though just stick with it, the first few days (and weeks) are a slog but it gets better! Group should hopefully help with latch if there is an issue, keep trying. Sending hugs, tea and strength! I was in your shoes just a few short months ago :)

thanks you for your responses

I'm hoping someone at the group can help me latch tomorrow.

I would just let him carry on but after more than half an hour it's quite sore. I could probably put up with that but know I'm going to nod off at some point and don't feel confident co sleeping

I'll try flipping his lip next time. daddy's giving him a cuddle at the mo and seems to be settling.

getting wet nappies but no poo since lunch time. trying to not let that worry me now - it's not that long is it? baby has turned me into such a worrier!

I'm loving it but just worry x

No poo is fine. Sometimes they can go a long time w/o poo.

It sounds like you are doing wonderfully; try not to worry. Co-sleeping is great, by the way. If you're interested, the easiest, and I think safest way to co-sleep is to have a huge, firm, mattress on the floor, with the baby next to you.

Good luck, and congratulations!

Totally normal to feed all the time. At 3 days mine did a mammoth overnight feed of 8 hrs straight! I just went with it, but luckily had got advice on latch earlier that day. Mine struggled too to open mouth wide enough as she was quite small. I found that shifting positions (to rugby hold) helped a lot.

noblegiraffe · 29/05/2013 08:29

If DS is 3 days old, then no poo is not fine. It's only much later that it's ok for bfed babies to go long periods without poo. This early it can be a sign that he's not getting enough milk.

Has he done a poo yet? Is it starting to change colour to yellow? If he still hasn't pooed, please contact the midwife just to check him over.

VisitorTheDog · 29/05/2013 12:43

Agree with the co-sleeping advice, hope things are going ok for you today. You're doing really well, this bit is hard as it can seem like all they do is feed but it's not a bad thing (although help with the latch so you're not in ain is a good thing!).

iamci · 30/05/2013 01:48

he did a small yellow ish poo yesterday (loads of the darker poo day before) but nothing today. plenty of wet nappies though. I'm seeing midwife Friday but I'll ring her if there's nothing by lunch tomorrow.

breast feeding group was really useful today. apparently latch seems fine. I know I just have to persevere more at night to get him on right. it's so much easier during the day when he's not screaming!

tonight is pretty much like last. falling asleep on Brest, move to basket and then wakes again.

we'll get there tho Smile

Good idea, babies that age should be having 3-4 poos a day so it's worth getting checked. Knowing babies he'll do a massive one just as she arrives :)

iamci · 31/05/2013 04:29

lol noblegiraffe! I rang at lunch but midwife wasn't concerned about him missing a day as he was getting plenty of wet nappies. anyway, 3 HUGE poos that afternoon - and weed twice on mummy whilst changing! Grin
