Windiness and bottle feeding

DC1 is 3 and a half weeks old and has suddenly developed wind problems after feeding. She is fed expressed breast milk during the day and formula at night and we've been using Avent bottles and teats so far.
Would buying anti-colic bottles and teats help solve her windiness? I've read about Tommee Tippee and Dr Browns bottles - but which are the best? Also, which size teat should she use? DC1 tends to guzzle her food and it normally leaks out of her mouth a lot (despite using size 1 teats).
The hv has also recommended colief and infacol - has anyone had any success with these?
Sorry for all the questions but if I can do anything to help her windiness/uncomfortableness that would be great!

Dr Browns helped my DD2 for sure. Use a newborn teat as it should not be dribbling out...also check her tongue here's a useful site regarding tongues for tongue tie though that's usually spotted early on it can be missed.

Feed her sitting well up...as upright as you can manage and try to keep her upright for winding for as long as you can.

If she gets trapped wind, try the tiger in a tree hold

Was just going to post the milk matters site too! Smile

Have you tried changing her formula?

Great, thanks for the recommendation of dr browns - i will be popping out to mothercare tomorrow so will check them out.

We have considered changing formula (we currently use sma gold) but the hv said all the brands were 'much of a muchness' - is there a particular one you would recommend for windy babies?
We were using the ready-made bottles of sma until last weekend but swapped to the powder because of the cost. We wondered if the ready-made stuff was better at preventing wind as dc1 was fine up until 2 days ago - or is windiness just something that happens to babies when they hit 3wo?

Are you shaking the formula to mix it? This shakes air bubbles into it, resulting in more wind. Stir the formula with a spoon to mix it instead.

I used tommee tippee anti colic bottles, hard to say if they made a difference, but I thought it was worth doing.

I'd avoid the infacol etc unless your baby is in distress, some wind is normal

It might be worth changing the formula, they do differ and some babies are windy on one but ok on others. My DN were both ok on Hipp Organic. If Lo is in distress you could try mixing some dentinox in with the bottles but I really would investigate tongue tie. Have a look at the milk matters link above and see what you think Smile

We used dr brown bottles also helped to sit baby up for longer after a feed and patting the back really low down almost on his bottom bought lots more wind up

thanks for all the tips. i had been shaking the bottle so will now stir instead.

i had no idea that tongue tie could affect bottle feeding - she was checked at a bf support group when she was 3 days old, but maybe i should get it double checked - would my mw know what to look for? i'm seeing her later this week.

i also noticed in the supermarket earlier that you can get formula especially for colic and constipation - does this actually work compared to the normal stuff?

Don't know about the formula for colic but yes tt can affect all feeding, including solids when you start weaning. I'd get it checked again, there is a whole thread on here of MNers who have been told that their Los don't have it, only to find out later they did. Unfortunately lots of MWs and GPS just don't know what to look for either. I'd ask the mw but if baby still isn't settled perhaps look at the milk matters diagnosis service or contact your local la Leche league leader and see if she can help.
