Breast pain and feel fluey

Awakeagain · 26/05/2013 06:09

I woke up in the night with a very full breast (unusual as ds is nearly 7 months) it is painful to touch on one side
I hand expressed to release the painful engorged feeling and have now fed ds on the same side
Breast feels pretty empty but the pain is still there
I also ache and feel fluey
I searched previous threads and people were asking 'do you feel fluey?' No one did

Hoping a wide mums netter can help me out

Sounds a lot like mastitis. If you have a temperature I think you need to get to the GP asap and get antibiotics, to stop it getting any worse. Tell them you need an appointment the same day.

Hope you feel better soon.

feeling fluey suggests mastitis is a possibility. the breastfeeding network do an excellent leaflet, available online. in phone so can't link but it is often worth printing it out to take to the Dr when it comes to bf stuff. have a look at it and see if you feel your symptoms match. if they do then go to a walk in centre or out of hours today as you will feel truely dreadful if you leave it til tomorrow.

in the meantime keep feeding and try massage on the painful area towards the nipple and different feeding positions. if you can feed with baby's chin pointing towards the painful area then that will help to keep it clear. you can take paracetamol for your symptoms.

Mastitis you poor thing. Get thee to thy GP. Get well soon. Keep feeding on both sides. Good luck.

Awakeagain · 26/05/2013 06:34

Thanks
I'll definitely have a look at the leaflet

Def mastitis. No one warns you how bad it makes you feel! I second the walk-in or ooh advice. Hope you feel better soon x

TwentyTinyToes · 26/05/2013 07:13

Agree mastitis, you need antibiotics today. You will feel dreadful if you leave it. Definitely take the breastfeeding network leaflet, if i remember correctly you need a longer dose of antibiotics than would normally be prescribed and doctors sometimes are unaware of this.

Keep massaging, feeding, apply heat to the area to the try to clear the blockage. You might want to look into a probiotic once you have the antibiotics because thrush often follows a course of antibiotics. Good luck.

nextphase · 26/05/2013 07:24

Yes another one saying possible mastitis.
OOH today.
Friend recently had this, and felt much better quickly, but it took a while to be back to 100%
Hope your feeling better soon

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 26/05/2013 07:27

keep massaging the sore boob. Can you feel a lump? try and work it through. Keep feeding and take regular ibuprofen to reduce inflammation. use heat before massaging then a cold pack afterwards to reduce inflammation and discomfort.

also look into reverse pressure massage. it can help move away some of the other excess fluid in the breast that can be helping to narrow abd block the ducts.

pm me if you need more info or help. good luck. I know how dreadful it feels x

Can mastitis come back whilst you are stool taking antibiotics
I've woken up with a sore boob again
I have no idea what is causing it

Bra? Sleep postliton? You could have a nipple blister/bleb contributing to the blockage. Is it the same place as before? It may be that the blockage didn't quite drain properly.

Awakeagain · 31/05/2013 06:16

Not where it originally started but more seemed to get blocked in the 1st day so its where the new blockage was
I've been feeding that side 1st every feed, expressing, making ds think milk is way better than solids
I have the same sleep bra as I did when ds was 1st born
My bras I've got 2 from him 1st being born and some I got later so would guess not to tight as have obv lost weight and boobs not swell as much at 7 months
Not sure now I'm sleeping but no different to how I have done so surprised at 7 months its affected me!
Will be back of to the docs today Sad

Have a look a kellymom and breastfeeding network websites for help on clearing if.

Keep feeding expressing every 2-3 hours till all symptoms have gone! It's exhausting but really helped me.

It could be that you need diff antibiotics or a possibility an abscess has formed so make sure you go back to the doctors.
