she slept loads last night (well she went to sleep at 9.30pm then woke at 1.30 and then I woke her to feed at 5-ish), she has lost interest and yesterday just had a few short feeds. she has had one short feed off one side this morning and is still sleeping. I think she has a cold.

pankicking milk will dry up if she doesnt feed more (she is almost 3 weeks btw)

Could it be because you are stressed maybe? I always found that when I was stressed or in a rush the ds' never fed as well. Could you try expressing to keep your supply up?

Enid · 16/05/2006 09:23

yes am definitely stressed

have loads of milk though and she is not crying, just sleeping

Express to excess for your freezer :)

DD did this on a couple of occasions - she did have a cold or was at least very snuffley. I was at a point where I had to express or I would have exploded very messily.

I dont have a expresso

maybe buy one today

what is a good one?

and is it ok to express this early on in feeding (2.5 weeks)?

Avent Isis is good (just about to use mine!).

I expressed when DS2 was 10 days old as I had mastitis and he wasn't feeding enough to help me (I have massive oversupply issues though - whether I express or not!). So express till you're comfy, feed her as well and remember to breathe Smile

I like my Avent Isis. Excellent pump.

SoupDragon · 16/05/2006 09:35

I like the Avent Isis.

I think you'll be OK this early as a one off expressing. You can express by hand (although I've no idea how!)

I hired the most amazing industrial Unigate type of electrical expresser from the NCT. It was really cheap too. I just could not get on with the hand expressers at all.

You just put the funnell thing over your nipple, flick a switch and go ahhhhhhh, that's better.

I'm stalking you today enid - I've got Avent Isis and Medela Electric pump which I HATE with a passion, but it is more effective. But if you've got plenty of milk then I would go with the Avent one - it feels less like a milking machine!

If you're worried she's not feeding you could cup/spoon/bottle feed some EBM into her, which she might find easier than b/feeding, but sounds like she just needs to sleep.

Hand expressing - I've never managed it, but I think things that help are putting a warm flannel on your breast, and gently massaging towards the nipple.

well we have an appt at the hospital later today (her umbilical stump needs attention) so I will no doubt pour all this out to the paed guy
