Bad sinus pain - nothing I can take can take it away

I have terrible sinus pain and have had for 3 days. My 11 month old is bfed and allergic to dairy, he isn't great with a cup or bottle so I am his only source of fluid (apart from that in food).

Having been keen to avoid antibiotics after a night in which I woke up every half an hour in pain, I have given in and gone to the emergency doctor. She had a look up and can see at least one huge polyp, she can't see anything in the really sore nostril because its so swollen.

She has given me Paracetamol with Codeine Phosphate 8mg. This has not even taken the edge off the pain. Even when I take Nurofen as well it is still agonising. My dh rang them earlier to say I was no better and they said that they can't prescribe anything stronger because of the bfing.

For the first time in 11 months I am considering throwing in the bfeeding towel. Before I do can anyone help?

I always got jaw and toothache with sinus trouble - it's all connected. Also pain behind the centre of the eyes and earache. Oh, it's lovely. Antibiotics did seem to clear it fast, but the infection left me wiped out for a while afterwards. I eventually had a minor op to open up my nose a bit which stopped me getting sinusitis.

Might help, but cranial osteopathy released my sinuses (blocked and agony for weeks) last year. Depite 2 courses of antibiotics they just got worse and worse. So I bit the sceptical bullet and it seemed to work after a couple of treatments. HTH

What is TMJ?

I am currently in agony. I am being a crap wife and a totally crap mother because I am in so much pain. We are moving house next month and this should be a happy time for us, instead we are sleep deprived and miserable. I just can't see any light at the end of the tunnel - nothing is working. I am no better than when I first posted, in fact I am worse because of the lack of sleep.

My MIL has just brought 3 wheatbags around. This is the closest I have got to heaven in 4 days. They are wonderful, she is wonderful. I will never have another MIL rant on mumsnet. Okay well maybe I will, but for now she is my number 1 person.

I realised how bad I feel when I begged her to come round tomorrow to help me with ds.

BTB - you poor, poor thing. Are the antibiotics nnot shifting it? Can you get back to your GP. Maybe you need a different antibiotic or higher does. I do know how you feel. I used to just cry with the pain.

gingernut · 27/01/2004 10:06

BTB, how awful. Agree with aloha, the antibiotics should be shifting this by now and I think you need to see your doctor again. Also, you really need to get some good sleep. Don't know what to suggest here - I've never used any sleeping pills but do use one of the Benylin cough medicines which contains a sedating antihistamine (it's called Benylin Cough and Congestion over here - the antihistamine ingredient which can make you drowsy is diphenhydramine) if I can't sleep because of a cold.

bobthebaby, have you seen an ENT specialist? If I were you, I'd insist on getting an emergency appointment because this thing is ruining your life at the moment. hope today's a bit better for you.

btw TMJ is temporo-mandibular joint pain which is incredibly painful.

Freddiecat · 27/01/2004 13:53

Oh dear you poor thing. I had sinusitis really badly last week and as I am pregnant cannot take anything at all. Thankfully it's easing off now.

I found that blowing my nose REALLY HARD in the shower did help for a little while. Also plenty of boiling water in a bowl - head over with a towel over the top. I tried putting Vicks in the water but it stung my eyes and I found just water on its own was best.

Someone mentioned Amoxcyllin antibiotics. My doctor told me that only two types of ab's work on sinuses - neither of which can be taken during pregnancy. He said the only AB which can be taken in pregnancy is Amoxcyllin but it hardly touches sinusitis.

My father in law said he had really bad sinusitis 20 years ago and was given a course of special heat treatments in the hospital. It seemed to be a treatment on the face - over where the sinuses are. He reckons he's hardly had any trouble since.

Best of luck - it's horrible. mine's largely gone now but am still partially deaf!

I felt a little better this morning, as I had had a reasonable sleep all propped up with hot wheat bags around my face.

I went to the dentist and he did some xrays and said the nerve in my tooth needed to come out. I have had issues with this tooth before so it seemed reasonable, when he drilled in all this revolting smelling stuff came out - I think it was safe to say something was very off inside there. He's cleaned it all out and I have to wait 10 days with a dressing on it to see if the pain goes away, or if he needs to poke around any more. On the plus side (and there has to be a plus side to it given the enormous bill) I have so much anesthetic pumped into me I can't feel anything at all. I was dubious about the teeth thing as I know sinuses can refer pain, but I am so sore I just want to cover all my bases as quickly as possible. I don't care who cures me.

I have got a quicker appointment for the ENT man which is on Friday. I think the combination of the polyps, sinus infection and this dodgy tooth all at once is why it was so very painful.

Wahey! The root canal treatment means that I only have a normal amount of sinus pain (which I can cope with until I see the specialist.)

Glad you're getting the problem sorted out, BTB, even if it means root canal treatment. I guess getting rid of all that gunk will help you recover faster, too. Take care!

bobthebaby · 30/01/2004 02:17

I went to the ENT man today, I don't know how he can work in an office with so many pictures of infected ears...
He had a root around up there and I had a CT scan and I go back on Monday to find out which bits he wants to cut out. Nice.

So look out for a thread about overnight stays in hospital and how my ds will cope...Doctor is very pro breastfeeding though (I guess when you insert that many grommits you would be)so I'm sure it will be fine.

Ds hasn't cried at all when I leave to go to these various appointments and leave him with MIL. He cried his eyes out when she left this afternoon though. Typical.

I personelly used sinusoothe nasal spray when I had severe sinus pain caused by an infection and it completely cured me. I have also used acupuncture in the past for cfs (me) and it was amazing. If it is your first sinus infection probably best visiting the doc.
