My number 4 ds born a week ago. Still yellow ( bloods for bilirubin done today) very very sleepy. Waking to feed. Good latch but he has three sucks and falls asleep or comes off. Expressing small amounts and syringe feeding him as I really don't want a bottle! Occasional feed he is good and sucks gently for a feed. About 30 mins. Lost 60g in two days post discharge then a further 50g in last 2 days. He was a ceaser at 40 weeks. I had a pph of 2 litres the night after delivery so have worked very hard expressing to increase supply. I will commence motilium on Saturday if I am still expressing so often to increase supply further. Any other supply tips? Sleepy baby suggestions. Stripping off, skin to skin, wet cloth, tickling, done done done. I refuse to give up! The others fed for at least 12 months.all had issues feeding but at least they all were awake and wanted to feed! Confused

chloe, you're right to be concerned about this - have you got a midwife you trust offering help and frequent visits? It's good he is being monitored and weighed - continued weight loss is something that needs to be addressed and you are doing this by expressing - you need to be expressing often at least 8 x in 24 hours, with a sleepy baby not yet feeding efficiently.

He prob needs larger volumes than you can get in him with syringe feeding - ask the midwife about this. The worry would be that even when he is staying on the breast he is still not transferring milk in sufficient quantities (weight loss would strongly suggest that), so think about effective ways to get milk in him. Don't be afraid of the bottle. It is a useful and enjoyable (for the baby) way to get milk, and it does not lead to 'confusion' if he is getting practice at the breast and if you are working on your supply to make it worthwhile for him to be at th breast.

I do think your best help will come from someone who is there with you, observing feeding and attachment to the breast, as well as frequent expressing.

Thanks for the help! It's appreciated. Bilirubin levels are in the ok range but went in and saw the paed reg last night and he was great. I guess I'm lucky we live in a breast friendly country (Aus) he was superb and just re wrote the rules according to our son. Pointed out that he is allowed and in fact meant to lose some weight for up to about 14 days and that no one has told him it can only be 10% Wink so feeling much better today! Fed over night. I have stopped nearly all pain killers containing sedative stuff as an experiment. Pain post cs getting better now anyway. Will preserve..
