Sharp, intense, stabbing pain in breast AFTER feeding

No blocked ducts, no lumps. Anyone experienced this? It's only on the left and after big-ish feeds. Lasts a few hours.

Agree sounds like it might be thrush. However I sometimes just get this when I feed after being very engorged?

tyedye · 07/05/2006 10:30

My dd feeds like an industrial machine sometimes, feels like you described and i just put it down to her "enthusiasm"usually settles down after a day or so.

Hi Zan & welcome to Mumsnet :)

Your best bet is to start a new thread - there's a link just above these posts "\link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=1364&showform=createconv.html&rnd=8518909225547687\Click here} to start a new conversation in the Breast and bottle feeding section". Give it a title that briefly describes your problem and go into detail int he post :)

zan · 07/05/2006 10:56

Thanks I'll do that.

Franch how do your nipples feel? Are they sore? Shooting pains can be a sign of thrush. If you scroll down on \link{http://www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/information/thrush.php\this BFN information leaflet}, you can read about the other symptoms of thrush in mother and baby. If you think it is get to the docs asap! HTH

spidermama · 07/05/2006 15:32

Thrush in the mild ducts. Do an archive search or have a look at \link{http://www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/search/index.php?search=thrush&mode=phrase\The Breastfeeding Network}.

I had this with my fourth (never any problems previously) sop I really feel for you franch. If the pain is after feeds too and feels sharp and jagged, there's a good chance it's thrush.

Many docs are reluctant to diagnose as they know very little about it so I found the page from the BF network a godsend. It even has a print out to take to the doc so they prescribe the right dose of fluconazole.

Good luck. Act now on all fronts as it's really nasty.

Have a read of the link and perhaps look in archives as this comes up from time to time and there's loads of good advice.

Good luck. xx

Thanks all. V useful link Tatties. Nipples ok altho they were briefly a bit cracked and sore recently. I havent got any of the other symptoms listed on the BFN page but the pain is exactly as they describe (if a bit longer-lasting), altho it is only on one side and I've had it a few weeks now.

As you say, sounds like I need to see the GP. Will do so tomorrow - thanks again, I'd never have thought of thrush, even tho DD2 had it in her mouth when she was born (she's now 8 months).

I went to a homeopath in the end franch after about six weeks of agony. It cleared up within 48 hours. I'll never know if it was the fluconazole (which had failed in week 3) or the remedy, but I would say it's well worth a go.

Yes beccles. And you also need to insist on a high loading dose because the thrush is systemic rather than simply on the nipples. Docs can be reluctant to prescribe the correct dose. Be assertive.

franch · 09/05/2006 14:49

saw gp today, got fluconazole. thanks so much everyone, I really wouldnt have thought of thrush myself :)
