Feeding and medication

Now I know as I'm breast feeding I'm pretty much limited to paracetamol, however past couple days I've had flu type symptoms (not actual flu thank god) and still have incredible pain in my throat when swallowing. DD is 9.5 months and hasn't fed at night for months. We do last BF to sleep around 7 then that's it until 7:30ish in the morning.

Would it be safe to take something in the evening after she's in bed to help me through the night, as she won't feed again until the morning? Would any medication be out my system by morning?

Thanks!

What were you thinking of taking?

IShallCallYouSquishy · 13/03/2013 20:09

Anything I can get my hands on! I was thinking cold and flu stuff or something that's specifically for throats if I can send DH off to sainsburys.

I've been taking paracetamol every 4 hours and drinking chamomile tea but none of it touches the pain in my throat Sad

Not really sure, I'm not trained and hopefully someone who knows more will be along soon. This might help though.

Here is some information. Most cold and flu stuff is either a) based on paracetamol or b) antihistamines or c) stuff that doesn't really do much.

The antihistamines are an issue, possibly, as they can really affect supply.

Oh ugh. here.

You sound like you have tonsillitis (get a torch and have a look at your throat, is it covered in white gunky spots?) It should clear up by itself in 4 days, but if it doesn't, you need to see the doc.

Gargling with warm salt water (1 teaspoon in a glass of warm water. Don't drink it!!) can help clear the infection. I had it recently and found ice cream soothing.

noblegiraffe · 13/03/2013 20:24

Throat lozenges like strepsils should be ok.

IShallCallYouSquishy · 13/03/2013 20:25

Thank you both. I might just have to suck it up until it passes. I've been very lucky that yesterday a friend came over to watch DD while I slept a bit, and she's also coming over tomorrow to take DD for some fresh air. I don't feel up to going out yet but poor baby needs some fresh air.

Baby's can't eat honey but would making myself hot honey and lemon be ok? Paranoid and PFB!

You can take ibuprofen while BF, better for inflammation than paracetamol. Honey & lemon also fine for you!

leedy · 13/03/2013 20:42

Also if you do end up having to go to the doctor, there are lots of BF-friendly antibiotics and, indeed, steroids (though I hope you don't - get better soon!).

IShallCallYouSquishy · 13/03/2013 20:51

Fab, didn't know if ibuprofen was ok so will get some of that. And even better it can be taken with paracetamol Grin

I'm hoping it passes in a couple days and don't need anything too scary for it.

Thank you all for your help yesterday. I went to the doctors today and I've got bacterial tonsillitis. First time in my life! I've been given a course of anti biotics that are compatible with feeding so hopefully will pick up in next day or so.
