Nipples suddenly soar again after 14 months of breastfeeding!

why is this happening? I found breastfeeding agony for the first 7 weeks but ever since then, everything has been fine and now this. My nipples feel so sensitive and a little raw. Could it be that dds teeth are rubbing against them?

Yes, she had 4 of her top teeth come through within the last 4 weeks. Before that she only had 2 at the bottom and I can't remember any problems then. Sometimes, I can actually see a couple of tiny cuts at the base of my nipples (if that makes sense) and until a few days ago, it was only one side that was soar but now it's both.
Also about a month ago, DD was ill with a virus and for about 4 days all she wanted to do was breastfeed. So I think they got an extra battering then.

I had thrush when she was very little but that was obvious at the time. I don't think that's it.

Interesting about what you said about the shallow latch. I think DD does that too. Is there anything I can do to change that?

Grin

Different meaning altogether it they are soaring... Wink

Sorry. I am not being helpful. Thrush?

NotAQueef · 13/03/2013 16:13

Could you be pregnant?

shelley72 · 13/03/2013 16:14

any chance you may be pregnant?! i was in agony and had been BF DD for 2.6yrs Shock.
it could be the new teeth rubbing though, i seem to remember they have to adjust their latch?

shelley72 · 13/03/2013 16:15

x post with NotAQueef!

Sore! Grin Sorry, am foreign!

No, not pregnant! I'm sure of that. But I wish I was, maybe my boobs do too?!

Is there away to test for thrush?

I'm at the stage again where I dread feeding poor DD and get quite impatient.

not sure about a test for thrush but i remember being treated for it and had to treat DD at the same time, to stop us infecting each other. i think they looked for little white spots in her mouth? can you phone your HV or do you have a local BF group run by a midwife?

OhdearIquit · 13/03/2013 16:53

No BF group and HV and GP are useless with trush. Last time I pretty much had to diagnose myself with the help of MN and demand the right treatment after they were trying to fob me off with the rubbish oral gel!

Soaring nipples :o

My DS2 is 14 mo and last month I had really sore nipples. It was definitely as his teeth came through. We had a bad week or so and I resorted to finding my tube of lansinoh. But it got better again- either his gums weren't hurting so much or he adjusted his latch around the new teeth.
I did find changing hold helped. He's usually fed across my body in cradle hold, I found putting him under my arm in rugby ball hold helped

SteepApproach · 13/03/2013 16:57

I've had little tooth marks too, as lo's latch became a bit "casual". Funnily enough, I always had warning of new teeth before they arrived because the latch changed, but after they were through it was fine!

Anyway, the latch can be improved, but it's probably a good idea to see someone in person who can look at what's happening.
