BF and DS's water intake

Do your DC's drink much water once you started weaning?

DS is coming up to 1 year. He eats solid food, but isn't often interested in drinking water. He bf's before breakfast, lunch, naps, bedtime, and 2-3 times overnight.

He only goes poo once every 4-7 days as well. He doesn't seem distressed by it. HV and nurse said I need to get him to drink more to make his bowels move more regularly.

I read that human milk composition changes based on your child's needs, so would he get his water intake from me?

I'm watching with interest. I hope someone in the know comes along soon.

if he's bfing on demand he probably gets most of his liquid intake from that.
dd used to ask for milk (ie whine and moan) but if I gave her a cup, often that would be what she really wanted.
sometimes it wasn't, but she soon told me.
have you tried handing him a cup when he's just playing? rather than have it at mealtimes?

ps some bfbabies do only poo every few days.

but leave a cup around all the time, see what he does. by the time dd was 1yo, she could hint out the cup

One of my friends had a baby who would only bf, not take a bottle or a cup. When she went back to work (at about 9 months), he would hold on all day then have a huge bf when she got home.

She would buy those fruit puree pots, and his childminder would water them down a bit, and any sauces too would have extra liquid addec. The gp seemed satisfied with this, and the boy had wet nappies etc. Eventually he did start to drink from a cup. I guess keep offering cups of water (and maybe milk, once he's 1), and keep an eye on his wet nappies and poos (not too hard).

Also, mine weren't interested in cups of water when they were still bfing as much as your DS. I think: it was a while ago now.

Thanks, I will try having the cup around in the living room. He likes drinking from adult glasses not baby cups. In general, he doesn't tend to feed himself and drinking is the same!

I do offer plenty of peeled grapes so he is getting some water from food.

His poo is quite formed, but he doesn't seem unhappy about going.

yeah, DD often prefers me to feed her instead of helping herself.
she's got better at it. :)
