3 week old bringing up her milk a lot and greenish poo

My dd is 3 weeks and today has vomited quite a few times, big ones too. She is a really hungry baby and I litreally feed her all day to the point it's become an issue and I recently posted about it. Anyway, I've been topping her up with formula but today I haven't as the midwife said if its a stomach bug don't, so I haven't and she has been feeding all day. Dh says it's cause I fed her too much ( forgot he was a breast feeding expert). She also has yellow poo but I swear there's a tinge of green. Doc checked her today and says she's fine, latch was checked by lots if people recently and that's apparently fine, so what the hell am I doing wrong! She hasn't been settled at all and I'm exhausted by all this feeding. She takes in a lot of air as I have good milk supply and it flows quickly. But why is she never satisfied and what is going on with the poo and vomit. Any ideas? I really need some sleep and I could really do with that top up soon as I've been feeding her on each breast since 5!!

Sounds like an allergy/intolerance to me. Same has happened with my dd, and we're waiting on a referral to get a cows milk protein intolerance diagnosed, as well as potentially other allergens :( try cutting all dairy and see how you go.

Cupcakemummy85 · 09/03/2013 21:16

Does that mean I cut out diary from my diet? I don't mind doing that as I've just found almond milk lol. I was wondering if it was an intolerance. Do u think its worth calling gp on Monday about it? She is super windy too, always farting the poor thing. She seems really uncomfortable today. The only reason I was able to feed her all day is because it's a weekend and my dd1 has been entertained my grandparents. I'm so tired and this feed has been going on for almost four hours :(

Greenish poo can be a sign that she's getting tooth foremilk and not enough of the richer hindmilk. Do you just offer one breast or switch sides?

MooseBeTimeForCoffee · 09/03/2013 21:21

Too much, not tooth!

Cupcakemummy85 · 09/03/2013 21:28

I offer her one side and when she's been in for a good hour and then I switch sides then after a long time on that switch her back to the other side and the cycle goes on. I've never known a baby to want to feed so much! If she is awake she wants to feed she doesn't want a cuddle or to have a kick around in a play mat and she won't take a dummy. She just wants to bloody bf.

Yes, you cut out dairy. It is hidden in a lot of food so you'll have to label study

GP's are useless in my experience but it can't hurt.

Is the poo mucusy or frothy?

If it's an intolerance, it could be causing a sore tum, and babies feed to settle their stomachs - they can't tell the difference between hunger and just a sore tum, so feed to try and stop the pain.

Cupcakemummy85 · 10/03/2013 19:26

I've so far stopped the formula too ups to see if that would help but it hasn't at all. Poor dd seems in real pain when in and off the breast. No one can hold her she is constantly looking for a boob. Her poos aren't frothy I don't think but they aren't massive explosive up the back ones like my first dd. I'm feeding for hours on end. Mil says I should just switch to bottles and b done with it. Funny that's what she said with dd1 and I fed her til she was 8 months. I've been so so many breastfeeding drop ins they say latch is great. What more can I do? Now I practically have to b a vegan lol. I'm having to wear a nipple shield now as I can't take the 3 hour marathon of feeding. Could it b colic?

Could it be tongue tie? The symptoms sound similar to the problems I had with DD. If it is it is v quickly treated.

Cupcakemummy85 · 10/03/2013 19:53

My dd did have tongue tie and it was snipped but am not convinced it has totally gone. However looking at her tongue I can't see how they could snip even more

you have my sympathies, a little one who is ill is very tiring, they just seem to want to feed all day, especially when they begin to feel better and make up for lost time! I remember us both having a d&v with my first and feeling sooo weak feeding all the time.
I would agree with Moose, the green poo usually indicates that there is more lactose (contained mainly in the foremilk) being taken in, and if she is feeding for 1 hour, chances are she has had a chance to digest the foremilk, and is puking up the hindmilk. So what she says makes sense.
Sometimes, as well when you are ill, you can become a bit intolerant to things (which is I guess why we don't fancy a big curry when we are getting better ourselves, just some dry toast!) so cutting milk out for yourself if it isn't a trial, might be worth it, but chances are it's one of those things and may go when she feels a bit better.
But you are doing the right thing, feeding means she is getting rehydrated, comforted, as for colic it usually rears its head about 3 weeks so you can only really wait and see, I'm afraid. The foremilk issue I mentioned before might be causing her a bit of tummy pain, again, I really hope it resolves itself for you when she feels better, this to shall pass and all that...

I'm so fed up of breastfeeding right now. I've been doing it since half past four until now and I've had enough I have to give dd a bottle because this is truley shit! It's driving me to tears. Four and a half hours of feeding!!!!!!!

banana87 · 10/03/2013 20:49

Yep, cut dairy as others have said. Also get her checked for silent reflux. My DD2 had the same and she had both dairy intolerance and silent reflux Hmm I cut all dairy (including things with dairy ingredients) and she was fine. If I accidentally consumed dairy it started again!!

Cupcakemummy85 · 10/03/2013 20:56

Well anything is worth a go. I'm really close to packing in the breastfeeding tbh. It's so stressful and it's actually making me depressed now. I can't satisfy her, she seems frantically starving after hours if feeding and I'm so fed up I'm in tears!

BuntyCollocks · 10/03/2013 21:55

Have you also tried giving her a dummy? If she's got a sore tum she might want to suck on anything.

Cupcakemummy85 · 11/03/2013 14:45

Yes tried a dummy but she gags on it. Lactation consultant said it could b fore milk hind milk imbalance and I should try block feeding. So will have to research that one

My 12 wo son is the same, he has green poos, seems to think whenever he's awake he needs to be feeding and will bf feeds for hours, vomits during and after feeds, seems to be in pain and has reflux. I've been off dairy for 5 days now and it does seem to have eased things for him as if I do have some dairy it affects him quite soon after I've eaten it. It's quicker to get in your system than get out if your system. I've tried gavison but my sin won't take it so I need to try something else. I know how exhausting it is and I understand what you're going through

Seriouslysleepdeprived · 12/03/2013 13:17

Sorry you're having a hard time. Did she have a Tongue Tie that was snipped? If yes, were you told to do the aftercare massage under the tongue for 4 days?

DS had a TT & it regrew twice, so we had it disrupted three times in total. The after are massage is really important as it prevents re-adhesion.

DS also had a cows milk protein intolerance & problems with soy. He has green nappies, was super farty, had a mucous chesty sound, dry skin and a cough. I've been dairy & soy free for almost a year now. You have to be strict with it and they creep into everything. Kellymom has some good info. It takes two weeks for it to leave your body and another two to leave theirs.

Have you tried le leche?

Cupcakemummy85 · 12/03/2013 18:50

Tbh it just seems to b in the evenings she is windy and in the day she is fine and is feeding not so frequently. The hv said it common to b colicky in the evening so we r trying infacol. We got dd weighed today and she has gained an incredible 1lb and 4oz in 10 days. Amazing considering she hasn't had many formula top ups so it's mainly me she has gained weight through which I'm so chuffed about.
I might try to swap milk for something like almond milk and start by doing the obvious diary foods and see what happens. Chocolate will b sorely missed lol.
It's nice to know I'm not alone but also sad to know other people are going through the same. It's bloody hard work breastfeeding, I got to this point last time with dd1 wondering if I should give up.
What r the symptoms for reflux? My dd throws up after each feed, is that a sign?

Cupcakemummy85 · 12/03/2013 19:00

I did try la leche but I find it hard to talk about breastfeeding problems with people that r so pro breastfeeding as I give formula top ups and they don't really understand what it's like having a toddler that's twenty months and a baby that wants to constantly feed and feed!! The lady said its normal, which I understand as I have breastfed before for quite a whole too! Maybe I just got one that didnt really understand my situation :s

OP posts:
Cupcakemummy85 · 12/03/2013 21:11

It's amazing, I'm looking at what foods I eat have lactose and diary in them and it's pretty much everything! I might b getting my pre-baby figure back after all now I have to say goodbye to my cake and choccies :( I will try it for a few weeks but this will b so hard for me. I love dairy :(

OP posts:
banana87 · 12/03/2013 23:45

Vomiting after every feed is a sign. If I were you I'd get her to the GP for a diagnosis of reflux and treatment. It will really help, especially with the colic. If she's gaining weight you probably don't need to do the formula top ups so I'd stop that too. Sometimes they want to go on the breast for comfort, and its quite likely that if she's uncomfortable she's latching for that rather than hunger.
