Is my baby lactose intolerant?

My baby is now 12 weeks old after being born 7 weeks early, therefore his corrected age is 5 weeks. I am breastfeeding but after feeding he seems to get terrible stomach cramps, his tummy rumbles (as if he's got ibs) the milk seems to go straight through him and he's usually quite sick after each feed (has been much more sick over the last 24 hours). His weight gain has been really good as he was born weighing 3lb 11oz and now weighs 8lb 2oz.

If he is lactose intolerant and I stop eating and drinking all dairy products does anyone have any idea how long it will take to clear my systems and help him get better.

It's breaking my heart to see him in such pain every time he feeds :-(

It takes about a week I think to clear the dairy proteins.but my ds has a dumbly Timmy and explosive poos sometimes but he doesn't have any intolerances. Most babies poo during or right after feeding if you're concerned that is too quick.
Is his poo mucusy or very dark?

Dumbly Timmy? Sorry a rumbly tummy!

Is he vomiting or spring up? Vomiting usually involves some protection, spittingup is less so

Thanks for that, his poos are explosive I'm just trying to see if I can make his life any easier and thought that cutting out dairy might be a big one to try to rule out if he does have any intolerances and he's well worth giving up chocolate for :-)

Hi monsterchild, he was just spitting up a bit of milk but it seems to be getting worse and is now vomiting and I'm worried he's bringing most if his feed back:-(

The vomiting it's most worrisome. I have read a lot about this but am no doc.what I've concluded is that poos can be petty colorful and explosive and it not be intolerance, more likely a forceful letdown causing gas and that could be making him eat too much and leads to vomiting. When my guy has gas gee just tries to eat more! He puked all over me one night before I figured out that babies can fuss for more than food! And they'll eat when the need winding.

I found the kellymom website really helpful. I'm on my phone so can't link but just search Kelly mom it should come up!

It's very rare for babies to have primary lactose intolerance (inability to digest lactose) but it can be partial (immaturity - it takes a while to get up to speed with producing lactase) or secondary to gut inflammation (due to a bug or to exposure to an allergen). You can't affect the amount of lactose in breastmilk by altering your diet.
It's much more common for the problem to be cows milk PROTEIN intolerance, which can be passed into breastmilk from maternal diet, and this is what you remove from your milk by going dairy free. Don't substitute with soya products, at least initially, because 50% of CMPI babies also react to soya. You need to read labels like a hawk because dairy is in the most unexpected places. You need a calcium supplement, requirement for nursing is 1250mg, you can get some from calcium supplemented oat/almond/coconut milk but you probably need tablets which you'll get from any chemist.
Other avenues to explore are getting him checked for tongue tie, which can cause similar problems, chatting to a BF counsellor about potentially forceful letdown as monsterchild mentioned.
I recommend you check out the Analytical Armadillo for posts about reflux, tongue tie, colic etc, kellymom as previously mentioned, Little Refluxers support board and this book

As mentioned above, if your baby is Lactose intolerant, he is can't break down lactose, which breast milk (and cows milk) is made of. Human milk has very high levels of lactose. Dairy intolerance is allergy to cows milk products you drink. So the first one can sometimes be eased slightly when using formula milk(made of cows milk which naturally has less lactose than human milk), but dairy intolerance would get worse with formula.
I can't help with the diagnosis but don't give up talking to the doctor/ health visitor about it, it can take a long time to be taken seriously.
