6hr old baby constantly feeding

Help - I gave birth 6hrs ago, and she has pretty much not come off the breast yet. I got her latched on about an hour after birth, the midwife thinks the latch looks ok, but every time I think she's has enough she will doze for maybe 10mins before rooting around again....what's going on???? My DS fed quickly and then slept for a couple of hours...

Exhausted.

Oh congratulations!

She can hear your heartbeat (her constant companion for 9 months), she's warm, her sucking reflex is satiated and she's ensuring a good milk supply when it arrives. It's no wonder really.

It is exhausting though. Can your dp/h take her skin to skin somewhere warm, under a blanket maybe and give you a bit of a break?

Unfortunately I already sent him home!! I figured she would eventually sleep so we may as well all get some rest....she will eventually sleep, right? Is this normal?

DD did this, fed constantly for the first 24 hours. Then she settled into feeding every 3-6 hours until she hit the 4 month growth spurt. That first day scared the bejeesus out of me though!!

Congratulations, and enjoy the cuddles for now :)

My youngest did this to the point he could have his gratin test done because he wouldn't settle off the breast enough for the test to be done and it was too awkward with him on the breast!

It's just a comfort for him. He isn't necessarily feeding. An he won't do that all the time so don't worry!

Our baby is 15 weeks old now and I already miss that first few weeks.

Congratulations and enjoy. And if you really need a sleep ( which you prob do) ask the nurse or mw for a bit of help.

Totally normal. DS fed like that for the first 24hrs. He then settled a lot.

Congratulations on the birth of your daughter. My daughter did this too, she was a very light sleeper and kept being awoken by the other babies on the ward having their night feeds, in the end a midwife on the postnatal ward rocked her off to sleep, i found things got easier once we got home from the hospital.
