Gastroentiritis and breastfeeding?

SenoraPostrophe · 19/01/2004 21:50

Quick pre-emptive question:

dd has a nasty bout of gastroenteritis (they think). Now dp says he is getting pangs in his belly.

Obviously I'm taking all precautions, but should I continue to breastfeed my week-old ds if I catch it too?

Yes. Breastfed babies are very unlikely to get gastroenteritis - b/f has a protective effect. Just be really careful with hygiene.

You really are having a load of cr*p at the moment, aren't you? It must be just awful - I do hope things improve now - and that you DON'T get gastroeneteritis.

keep feeding - I had gastroenteritis when DS was 4 months - felt too ill to feed for 1 day although Dr told me was Ok and milk dried up ovenight. Really hope you don't catch it, last thing u need with a little one to look after

Keep feeding - I had terrible gastroenteritis when my dd was 2-3 months old. MIL had to come to the rescue, just bringing dd up for feeds in between me throwing up and lying in bed. I was very worried dd would get it, but she was fine. And, although I didn't eat for 3 days and couldn't even keep water down on the first day, my milk supply coped. It may have dipped, but it was soon back to normal.

I think if anything the breastfeeding will help the baby resist infection.

Yes, she won't catch it through breastfeeding. Agree you should wash your hands though. Fingers crossed you don't get it. Ds and I have both had a 24 hour vomiting bug at the weekend. There's a lot of it about...

Oh, that's not fair, SP - I hope no one else gets it.

I had a tummy bug when dd2 was three weeks old. I carried on bfeeding as I didn't reckon that f-fing would make any difference to whether she caught it or not. As it was, she didn't catch it.

I think that your milk includes specific bacteria to fight any infections that you or baby may have and is easily adaptable. Don't know how this works though.

Yes definately continue to feed. You will give ds the antibodies you generate (if you get it) to fight it. Hope you manage to avoid it. What a shame for you all
