DS 5 months-milk intake seems low

I'm going to take ds to the drs if this continues, but just wondered if anyone had any experience of this.
It is a real struggle to get ds to take his bottle. I've been told for his weight, he should be on at least 37 oz per day, but we are lucky to get 25 into him. He takes 3 oz of a 6oz bottle, and then refuses the rest.
He has been like this for the past week or so, and not sure if its connected, but we realised this morning he has not had a poo for 3 days.
I'm going to give him some water later to see if this encourages a bowel movement, but does anyone have any idea about the feeding? The only time I can get almost a full bottle into him is when he is almost asleep-its like he has no energy to fight back! We are also going to try changing his milk today (currently on cow and gate) to see if that helps.
DS is fine in himself, and is rolling around the floor, and smiling as normal Smile

Have you tried changing his teat? My son does this occasionally I moved him from a number 2 teat to a number 4 teat. Also your ds could be teething which will put him off milk.

I was just about to update to say he was on a number 2 teat, and was it worth going up oneSmile
Will try him on the next size teat as well. He must be hungry though, as he slept from 9am to 8am this morning, but he has only had 3 oz.

Yea I suggest going up a teat. I bought the next size up a number three but my ds was worse on it so went up again and he is up to 7 oz bottles a day.

I wouldn't think it's anything to do with the milk, he's probably tired sucking by half way through.

Do you heat the formula up? My DD only gets one bottle a day, rest are BFs, but we have to do it in two parts (3oz in 2 bottles so 6oz in total) as she refuses to finish it if the milk gets too cold for her liking. It has to be really warm before she will take it, fussy little madam!! Might be worth a try tho with your LO.

My DD does this but she has silent reflux. The milk seems to hurt her.

25 oz sounds fine to me - mine has only ever taken about 30oz/day at the most from 1 month to 6 but still jumped from the 25th to 80th centileish (in line with height).
I've never understood the weight/ formula ratio thing as I thought their calorific intake plateaus after the first month to the 6th. If mine was drinking calculated by weight she'd end up on over 40oz/day at 6 months and be off the charts! She's already a chunkster. After the 4 month mark mine has had bouts of getting v distracted by the outside world and won't feed properly unless she's in a quiet place.
You'll know if there is a problem with him though - but if its only the feeding volume you're worried about (and his weight's good) because of what you're told about what he should have, I'd be tempted to ride it out.

Thanks for all the advice. We are just sterilising the new teats at the moment, and will give them a go with his next feed. Babies are such a worry! Will let you know how he gets on

Woo hoo! We have just had a poonami, luckily while Grandma was changing him. We then had a 6oz bottle gone in about 10 minutes Smile

Good to hear. Hopefully this will solve everything
