Does anyone here donate their milk to a milk bank?

Our local hospital ( St George's in Tooting) is apparantly very short on breastmilk donors at the momnet. My milk is too mature (DS2 is 4 ) but I thought posting here might raise a bit of awareness.

I hear it's quite easy to do and it can make a real difference to the premature and very sick babies in the hospital if their mums are unable to produce enough milk for them (which is understandable give the situation they find themselves in).

I asked at my local hospital, Bristol, and they didn't have a clue what I was talking about :(

I'd give some to anyone that needed it, but do you need to be local to Tooting?

I did with both dds. I dropped it off at my local hospital, & it was sent to either Southampton or Oxford for pastuerising etc. UKAMB have a fb page and website for anyone interested.

Which hospital in Bristol? I thought that Southmead had set it up recently.

I was told mine was too mature as DS was over 6 months. I'd have loved to donate. If I have another one I will

newtonupontheheath · 08/02/2013 20:06

I believe they like donors to donate before their dc are 6months old.

I donated with ds to Chester milk bank. I haven't this time because I was reading about the cost of screening etc and having 2 under 2, I wasn't sure I'd be able to commit enough to make it worth their whole. It's a shame because I really wanted to Sad

It's a good cause, well done for flagging it OP

Milk donors, you are wonderful! Thanks

I was given donor milk for my DS when he was born too small and skinny to suck. It meant so much to me that I was able to give him breastmilk even though I couldn't express any myself, and also really motivated me to persevere through the tough early weeks of breastfeeding once we got home. 18 months on and he is a healthy toddler, and still breastfeeding!

Thank you, you wonderful ladies!

I did with DD (2008), my mum did with me (1978) and my nan as well (1950). We are very milky ladies!
