DS and a dummy.

I am EFF my 11 day old (no hassle please - beating myself up enough about "failing" him by giving up BFing on day 4, but that's another story).

He is getting through the 4oz advised by the HV and still demanding more, the trouble is that when he gets more he spews in spectacular fashion. So, he really doesn't need more is just being greedy/looking for comfort.

Is it okay to give a dummy at this stage, and at this age? He has sucking blisters that the midwife says is due to a strong suck reflex?!

I wish they came with detailed manuals....

Use a dummy, I did. My dd had sucking blisters and had such a strong suck. Ooo gives me chills thinking about it! Bf certainly didn't last long in our house. It allowed he'd to suck to her hearts content and didn't made the blisters any worse. What I would look at is changing to a bigger teat hole on your bottles as that will stop the struggle and make feeding easier off him and hopefully ease the sucking. I remember taking dd to gp and fed her during the spot, the gp was gobsmacked as to how hard she sucked on the bottle and advise bigger holes.
By the way, we took her dummy away at 2.5yrs and she had none of the effects my stupid hv said she would. Good luck x

Give the dummy. He might not even take it, actually, but if it will make things easier for you both then do it!
My DD wanted to comfort suck all the time and we got to three weeks and I got her a dummy. She only has it at night now at 10months and she still gets comfort from the sucking.

And don't beat yourself up about stopping BF. Your DS got colostrum which is already an advantage and benefit - well done for managing that if you were already struggling at such a hormonal and painful time!
