Reintroducing bm to a 19 month old via a bottle/cup - bitty?

This may seem a strange query.

Dd1 is nearly 11 weeks and exclusively bf - and I can express 4 ozs in about 2 mins - supernorks! Smile

Dd2 is nearly 20 months and was mixed fed but mostly bf until 10 weeks - when it all went a bit pearshaped and I moved to ff - because of weightloss/hv advice -etc.

I have always felt really guilty about stopping bf dd1, esp as she is a bit 'solid' at nearly 30lbs - blame it on ff (rightly or wrongly) dd1 doesn't eat any 'crap' but does have a good appetite (I suppose I should be thankful).

Dd2 has 7 ozs milk in the morning - on her cereal and the remainder in a bottle and 7ozs at night in a bottle - she has yogurts/cheese as well - has organic full-fat milk.

Is it O.K. to give dd1 some of the expressed milk in a bottle or do you think I am weird. Would the composition be O.K. for dd1 as the milk is for dd2 (or so my breasts think IYKWIM)

I feel it would quell my guilt if I could reintroduce some bm to dd1.

What do you think? TIA Smile

i am a bit mixed up with your dd1/2!

but i think i get what you're saying... ebm is fine to give to a 20 month old.

i was going to say that I didn't think it was nutritionally any better given her age... but i might be wrong1

Harpsichordcarrier · 26/04/2006 12:57

why not? bm is good stuff all round and why would it be weird?
The WHO redommends breastfeeding all children until at least 2 years. There are health benefits in giving bm to a 19 months old, yes.
Envy at the expressing btw

I think it's a great idea hotmama. My older three were still feeding at this age. Breastmilk is great stuff.

sounds like a fab idea hotmama, will probably be doing the same with dd when d? is born in a few months as i felt terrible at having to stop bf-ing (stopped as i was pregnant again and i'm just not brave enough for trying tandum feeding a newborn along with my quite hyper and rough dd)

can't hurt to give it a try and bm is certainly better for any very young child than cows milk. good luck and let us know how she takes to it Smile

Sounds a great idea to me.

Am [gobsmacked emoticon) at the rate of expressing you can do. I took at least 30-40 mins to get that much even when I was doing it regularly.

moondog · 26/04/2006 14:43

Why not??
A million times better for him than cows' milk!

hotmama · 26/04/2006 17:09

Thanks sooo much for your responses. I was just a bit worried that it would seem a bit weird as dd1 hasn't had bm for so long.

I'll get expressing and let you know how I get on - assuming dd1 will like bm on her weetabix! Smile
