Posterior tongue tie/lip tie - any experiences? Especially if you had it cut at 2-4 months old

Hi, my DD has just been diagnosed with a posterior tongue tie and upper lip tie (her upper lip is always curled in rather than out due to this). DD is 14 weeks, though was 6 weeks prem and tube fed for the first 3 weeks, so only been BFing for 11 weeks, if that makes sense.

I'm worried it's now so late for the TT correction that it won't make much difference or could even make feeding more difficult for DD because she would have to relearn how to feed with her 'new' tongue (though it's clearly pretty hard for her at the moment poor thing, she takes in loads of air and tires quickly, plus it's sore for me too).

I'm also looking into getting the TT snipped, but am finding it harder to find someone who will address the lip tie, it seems these are usually left untreated in th UK for some reason.

Has anyone had a posterior TT snipped this late? How did it go, did it improve BFing for you - and if so, how quickly?

If your DC also had a lip tie - did you get it cut (if so where) and if not, did you find BFing was still difficult after the TT was cut?

Thank you!

just popping back to update.

we saw Graham I Smith at Kingston Hospital (privately, £80 fee), he cut the tongue tie but said the lip tie was fine and didn't need treating. I gather from his assistant that he will rarely treat lip ties but he does sometimes if he thinks it's warranted.

There hasn't been any particularly obvious improvement in DD's latch since the snip. What improvement there has been I think is more down the the cranial osteopath we have been seeing rather than the TT snip. Hopefully with time and more osteo things will improve more though.

I too was told there was no tongue tie, by the nurses in the hospital where DD spent her first 3 weeks. I even saw a BF counsellor in the hospital as DD was taking so long to learn to latch - this was ascribed to her being prem, the BF counsellor didnt even look for tongue tie Angry. I really wish it had been found and cut sooner as DD has now learned her "chomping" method and will take a while to relearn, if indeed she ever does.

Hi, I have a 17 week old just diagnosed with a tongue and lip tie. She has all the normal feeding issues with poor latch/taking in +++ air, lots of wind, reflux, difficulty settling evening/night etc.
I have just booked an appointment with Dr Levinkind for Tuesday to assess her and laser both if necessary and was just wanting to know about peoples experience of his clinic, the procedure and how your baby was afterwards. I would really appreciate any information you can give me as I am feeling a little nervous as I cant find much direct information/reviews about him or the service.
Thank you very much.

I have now had my dd Ptt revised again, and her lip tie done, but by John Roberts at cote royd by laser. It is hands down the best thing I've spent money on. No pain now (touch wood) a greatly improved latch, better transfer, so a better supply. The improvement has been miraculous.

Thanks BuntyCollocks! That is brilliant news for you fingers crossed I get a similar result!

How old is your dd bunty? And how much did it cost, if you don't mind me asking. I've been waiting for a call back from cote royd this week to have the same treatment for my dd. how traumatic was it?

BuntyCollocks · 23/03/2013 12:54

DD was 8 weeks and 5 days, and is 12 weeks today. It was £360 altogether, for the consult, procedure, osteopath and lactation consultant.

She was fine immediately after, although she was extremely upset 3 hours after, and that lasted about 3 hours. It does warn you of that in the leaflet. I did lots of cuddles, gave her expressed milk, and when she calmed, she latched on fine. But she did during those few hours refuse the boob, a finger, and her dummy. I was shitting it.

TooManyDicksOnTheDancefloor · 23/03/2013 13:39

Thanks bunty, did you have the ties diagnosed by him or by the NHS? Also, is the osteopath provided by the them or did you go to one yourself after? Sorry for all the questions.

BuntyCollocks · 23/03/2013 17:13

Ties self diagnosed, although the Ptt backed up by nhs infant feeding coordinator. Hospital where I had her said there was no issue, as did local hospital. I had to self refer to another one where I knew her due to my sons ties (also missed by everyone but her).

Osteo provided by cote royd.

DS has TT and lip tie cut with laser. The tongue tie re-grew (twice) but lip is fine. We are intermediate with feeding, so cutting the lip tie has seen improvement for us.

Zemm, how did it go with you with Dr Levinkind?
