On Sunday night I had a really nasty bout of sickness and diarrhoea, and couldn't keep sips of water down. I haven't had sickness or diarrhoea since Monday morning, but was very feverish on Monday afternoon. I have felt a lot better since Tuesday although still not right, I feel a bit nauseous at times and I haven't really felt like eating much. I've been breastfeeding DD on demand still throughout this time. I'm really worried that my supply is low now as my boobs don't feel full like they did before I was ill, and the milk doesn't spray out so much! DD seems fine and alert and active, maybe feeding a bit more than usual. Do I need to be worried?

Some mothers do notice a minor drop in supply with a bad bout of sickness, but this is temporary and things right themselves very quickly in a day or so.

Soft breasts mean nothing - this is a normal change that happens with established breastfeeding, so it may be this is what's happening to you. Spraying is a feature of the early weeks really.....most women find it settles down after a while.

Your baby is fine, and if she is feeding more often then that's her way of getting things back to rights! Frequent feeding also means breasts become less full between feeds. Not an issue :)

Thanks Tiktok, DD is 16 weeks now and up until I had the stomach bug she was having to pull off me at every feed until the milk stopped spraying out, but this seems to have stopped now, which is a good thing but I was worried as it seemed to be caused by my supply dropping from being sick. UP until I had the bug my boobs did get very full especially at night. 5 days on I don't seem to be back to normal. I wondered if it was because I'm not eating enough but I didn't think that affected milk production?

She is having plenty of wet and dirty nappies and seems totally like normal which I'm sure is the main thing Smile

Supply is unrelated to eating enough, except for serious long term starvation.

The temp drop in supply noted by many women with a severe gastric episode is prob related to the body's resources dedicating themselves to getting well...note milk does not disappear, and the drop is compensated for by the baby eating more often anyway.

Sounds like it is pointless to worry about it :)
