underwired bras for nursing, are they bad?

I thought they could block your milk ducts and put you at risk of mastitis. But looking on eBay for new with/ without tags ones I've seen quite a few underwired nursing bras, first time I've come across them so got me wondering...

If it makes a difference, im feeding a 7mo weaned baby so breasts rarely get 'full'/ hard any more.

I used them from the start. Had no problems at all.

I've never had them as I was told they can damage milk ducts from wire poking in and cause you pain. It was nice to get away from them tbh.
I know we are told to suggest non wires when I am peer supporting but tbh I haven't ever been asked so I can't remember the exact reasons now.

Not too helpful really am I, must go to bed I think

I went back into underwired normal bras when my DDs were about 8 or 9 months.

It's OK to wear a bra with underwires IF it has been fitted properly by someone who really knows what they are doing- none of that 'add 5 inches' bullshit. If you're a D+, go to Bravissimo and whatever size you are avoid M&S like the plague.

I would still keep an eye out for blocked ducts, especially if you go a while between feeds and get engorged.

Thanks everyone. I guess the stage we are at with bfing they might be ok then.

eaurouge why do you say avoid m&s? I saw a couple of nice ones on eBay (new) from there...

I think I'm unlikely to get engorged again ( hopefully) bc we're doing blw so milk feeds are dropping more gradually.

I use them, they are ok, no problems at all.

Because they are shit at fitting bras, not because their bras are rubbish. If you've seen some bargains then go for it, just be sure they are a really good fit. Getting fitted properly is so important.

I still get engorged every now and again if I go for a while between feeds and my youngest is almost 2yo. It can happen even with a baby on solids. They don't usually drop feeds until later on, BLW is not meant to replace milk feeds to begin with- the solid food is in addition to breastmilk. There's a really good explanation here

I have two elomi under wired nursing bras and they are brilliant. I also have non under wired ones. Tbh the under wired ones make my boobs look amazing ( if I do say so myself! Wink) so I end to wear them out of the house iykwim!

I had Anita underwired t-shirt bras during my last bout of bf and they were the most comfortable nursing bras I had ever worn, including NCT ones. You can get them from Figleaves. They did not press on the ducts at all. Brilliant.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll check out those brands!

I got fitted in mothercare this week as I'e felt for the last month or so my bras weren't supportive enough any more.

We're still feeding on demand but dd has taken to blw much better than her older bro took to solids so im feeding less than before ( based on her lead iyswim!)

Thank you everyone.
