Not sure on this one sorry. If there has been some weight loss has Lo been checked for tongue tie ?

habhann · 19/01/2013 21:40

Ds was checked no ttie...he latches on well but gets frustrated....fussy in the evening time..have fast let down, tried laidback bf. District nurse has recommended Gaviscon as he is still spitting up. How many doses to give and how to keep Gaviscon from coming back up again

Really sorry but can't help with the gaviscon. He does sound very much like my DS though who was tongue tied, it might be worth getting him checked again as it can be very easily missed. Is there a bfing support group near to you?

habhann · 19/01/2013 21:49

I am going to go to support group this week..could there be a tongue tie even though lo was checked in hospital and feeding clinic ...thanks for advice .just gave the Gaviscon on a spoon but it has come up again

Sorry can't advise re Gaviscon. When DS had immunisations the pharmacist gave me a syringe with dosages marked on side. It has a little stopper thing on the end that you put on the opening of the bottle and then pull the plunger thingy to get medicine.

NippyDrips · 19/01/2013 21:59

Watching with interest as ds is constantly spitting up again. I tried the gaviscon but struggled to get it in him. He is gaining weight so I just spend a lot of time cleaning him up.

He did have a Tt and was snipped at 1 week. There have been signs that it had grown back but feeding is ok (6 months now) so we are leaving it alone.

Imnotaslimjim · 19/01/2013 22:06

Is it the powder sachets? I found mixing them with the smallest amount of water possible, syringing it in then getting DS straight on the breast was the only way to get it into him

Have they said what they're giving the Gaviscon for? Do they think he has reflux?

Heartbeep · 19/01/2013 22:10

It's a nightmare to administer when breast feeding. I used to express a little milk, mix it with that & give in a bottle as baby wouldn't take it with water in a syringe, he'd just spit it back out.

habhann · 19/01/2013 22:42

Ds was born at 35 weeks has been spitting up after breeds...i will try giving Gaviscon and then put him to breast..he is well, active lots of smiles

I used to express a little milk and mix it.

MyNameIsSuz · 19/01/2013 23:08

We use it and we're ebf, i mix it with water and give it to him in a bottle mid-feed - first boob, gaviscon, second boob. I was told give the full six doses or it doesn't work.

habhann · 19/01/2013 23:15

Great advice..will try to give all six doses ..how long was your lo on Gaviscon for ???

I hope you manage to get it into him, you've had some fab advice (we were lucky in that the syringes worked first time)

My DS was on it from 2 days old (was pretty poorly from birth) until he was 18 weeks when we swapped him to a sensitive milk (had to quit BF at 4 days :()

habhann · 19/01/2013 23:25

Ds did take it on spoon, it just came back up.. Will link in with LC on Wednesday for review

I use infant Gaviscon for my 17 weeks old. She has silent reflux.

She use to arch her back when feeding and would cry.
She would also cry if I put her down.

You need to mix it with a feed. I do 120ml and add one sachet.

You can give it max 6 times a day. I started with 3 a day and now only twice a day.

Gaviscon makes feed ticker so it stays in their tummy.

Hope this helps.
All teh Best

MyNameIsSuz · 19/01/2013 23:27

Mine's been on it since six weeks and is now sixteen weeks. I'm going to stop it very soon and see if he can do without now he's bigger, but it's been great - really settled him, we got more sleep and he put on weight.

I hope it works out for you!

BrainGoneAwol · 20/01/2013 00:22

We were told the dose depends on weight. Under a certain weight it is one sachet, and over a certain weight it is two sachets. Your GP should have told you with the prescription.

Mix it with 15ml cooled boiled water and give via syringe. If you can mix it with breastmilk or add it to a bottle that's easier. It doesn't make anything thicker. It makes a lining to reduce acid 'splashback' in the same way adult gaviscon works.

Be aware that it can cause serious constipation. If that happens reduce the dose and phone your GP to ask if you should continue. There are other things they can prescribe instead.

Our paed told us that you don't have to build up the dose because it simply gives that 'lining' to the stomach each time. This means you can use it when needed and not when not.
