weaning off the bottle at 12 months....how did you do it?

my 10 month old isn't too bothered about her bottle anymore. She still has a pint of formula a day but we put it onto cereal or into a cup mainly.

She does have a bottle at bedtime, but it takes her ages to drink it and she fiddles with the teat quite a lot. It's a nice wind-down to bed though (we go straight from bath to the spare room, have a bottle in the armchair then off to bed).

I'm thinking of weaning her off baby formula at 12 months and also off the bottle, but not sure whether to keep the night time bottle and if so, when should we aim to let it go by? My friend's 5 year old son still has a bottle, which alarms me!

The other thing is, after 12 months, how much cow's milk does she need?

10 mths already!!! Wow....
My ds weaned at 11 mths.
I've never given him milk, apart from what he has on cereal and in cheese/yoghurt.
My dd was the same.

Kidsneed less milk than you think.

When Dd1 went on to cows milk at 1 year i gave her a pint of milk a day plus milk on cereals etc.

If it's a nice part of the bedtime routine you could try just giving a small amount of milk in a cup at bedtime? No point keeping her on the bottle if she's not that bothered with it. Then just give her a bit more milk, cheese, etc during the day if you want to make up to a pint a day.

hi mogwai,my ds went off his formula at 9 months so starting giving him a pint of full fat cows milk a day, split between milk on his weetabix and drinks and also fromage frais after lunch and tea for added calcium. The last bottle i took away was the bedtime one on all 3 of my children. What i did was start them on a any way up cup during the day with either milk or orange squash in it.Then once they were used to it just took the bottle away completly. You may have a couple of nights were they are a bit restless but it soon passes, and all of mine were off the bottle by 12 months. The most important thing i would suggest is that once you have made the decision to take the bottle away actually throw the bottles away so your not tempted to give into the child when they start performing for their bottle. It does work trust me.Good luck:)
