How much milk and solids?

My DS is 7mo, he has always been on the 91st centile and was EBF until 6 months. We then started BLW and introduced formula, all going well. When I had him weighed this week he had gone up to the 98th centile and the HV says its a big gain and we need to cut back on milk.

He's not a greedy baby and won't take milk if he's not hungry and also because of doing BLW it's hard to gauge how much he's actually eating.

He's having around 26oz of milk a day I've tried to cut him down but he's having none if it!

How much milk did/does your 7mo have?

I'm a bit confused as initially the HV said not to worry how much solids he was eating as he'd get his calories from milk and "food before one was just for fun?".

I don't want him to be hungry but I don't want him to get overweight either although he doesn't look fat he's just chunky!

26oz is fine. A minimum of 20oz is recommended from 6 months to 1 year and he is not having much more than that. At that age my ds still had 5 milk feeds plus 3 small meals. I would personally just avoid the hv!

What's his length centile like? Did te HV take that into consideration?

breatheslowly · 19/01/2013 21:42

Definitely need to consider length as well as weight.

What is he eating in his BLW?

Does he have food or milk first?

PoppyWearer · 19/01/2013 21:45

Get his length done next time as well. My DS is tall/skinny and I was accused of under-feeding him until his length was measured!

Onlymydogunderstandsme · 20/01/2013 19:25

No the HV didn't take his length, they never do but it would make sense that it should be a consideration. He is quite long actually. He has a bottle when he wakes up, one around midday, one at bedtime and then normally another around 10:30pm, which talking to friends seems about average.

He has a variety of foods and the HV was very happy with what he is eating she has said it's healthy and the right foods so I'm happy with that side of things, it's just the milk!

Thank you for your advice and replies its made me feel better!

Not that I think he is overfed (I really don't know), but does he need a bottle at 10.30? We continued to dream feed DD longer than we probably needed to as we were worried that she would wake up hungry and we wanted to get a proper night's feed. When we stopped dream feeding her she didn't wake up any earlier or wake in the night.

Onlymydogunderstandsme · 21/01/2013 11:19

He wakes up for the bottle at 10:30 rather than it being a dream feed. I've tried not giving it to him but he won't go back down without it!

You could switch it for water. At least that is something I have heard, but never tried.
