well, DS finally born day before yesterday and milk not even in yet, but he has a suck like a sink plunger and he's given me blisters!! None of the DDs ever did that.

Is there anything anyone can recommend that I can send DH out to Boots to get tomorrow? I really am not a wimp but this hurts and coupled with afterpains and sore lady bits I am not happy.

TIA xxx

ouch, ouch, ouch.

It's horrible you have my empathy, I've had blood blisters before now for long periods of time I would go and see a BFing counsellor pronto as it's probably positioning (I think everyone should see them anyway tbh!)

SoupDragon · 20/04/2006 20:43

Lansinoh or Kamillosan will help but you need to sprt the positioning/latch out or it won't get better. Def call a bf counsellor

when i had a lot of soreness i used nipple shields (just on one side) and it really helped even though many people advised against it, it got me through that "bite on this, it's gonna hurt" stage (ie latching on)

tiktok · 20/04/2006 20:47

Call any of the helplines - many schools still on holiday so this means some of the lines are not fully covered, but keep trying!

Soreness like this so soon is almost certainly positioning and attachment related.

It needs to be fixed - and the midwife should be able to help, of course.

AFAIK he's latched on fine and I'm hoping when milk come in he may calm down a bit - you should see him go at the moment!

I think it's because he's a he - the DD's never caused any problems at all and they were all fed for at least a year each.

Lansinoh - I think that is the name I was trying to think of but wasn't sure as I've never had to resort to using anything before. God. You would think once I was on to my 5th baby I wouldn't have any probs so it just goes to show.

Thank you ladies! Am now going to grit my teeth and have another go...

Agree about the positioning and seeking some help.

For the blisters I had some brilliant stuff from the hospital after I had DD -can't remember what it was called but it was a coated gauze that you cut and popped on your nipples. If you ask your midwife/pharmacist they may be able to help. Also found Lansinoh very good.

allyco · 20/04/2006 20:52

ooh and tiktok - i mentioned it to the midwife today really just in passing so I had something to say to her(!) and she said "blimey that must hurt. Have you got any formula?" Shock

Now if it had been my first baby I would have probably thought what she was saying was for the best. Luckily I am a stubborn old mare and he'll be breastfed like it or not Wink

dd2 chewed blood blisters on my left nipple the day she was born. poor positioning was the cause.

keep trying for a bf counsellor - i fed dd2 off the right boob in 'football' position, w/her under my arm, and expressed off the left for about 3 days till left boob healed up w/Lansinoh.

couldn't get the hang of the front to front position until she was about 1 week old - with a LOT of help from NCT counsellor!
