Shooting pain when feeding and lump in breast.

Ds is 8 months old and is starting to take less and less milk as he eats more. On Sunday I noticed that my one breast was a bit sore and I felt a small lump. So whenever he fed I massaged it. However the lump just seems to be getting better and I'm now getting shooting pains deep in the breast after feeds. And today I've started getting excruciating tears in the eyes pain in my nipple when he feeds, plus it feels sore and bruised all the time! It's only in the one breast and I've tried massaging it, hot and cold compresses and putting him to the breast lots, but even after a good feed the lump still feels huge. It's quite deep into my breast and seems to now be about a quarter or my breast. Oh and the whole are is red and hot!
Help, this is unbearable!

Some options:

  1. it may be a blocked duct. In which case, can you try feeding with your DS's chin to the lump? This always involves being in a weird position, at his age, you might manage it by lying on your back on the bed and putting him on his belly on you, at whatever angle works? (Or he could be lying down on the bed, on his back, and you crouch over him)
  1. There may be a milk bleb/blister - look on the affected nipple for a little white spot. Hot compresses, on the nipple, before a feed, can help. Check kellymom.

Shooting pains can also be a sign of thrush it's bloody agony

Lump, red, pain, change in feeding patterns could be mastitis esp if lump been there for two days. I would get antibotics from doctors ASAP

They canatch different due to change in breast shape which causes more pain.

Also given the time I would check your temp and if its up call 111 for advice if its mastitis antibiotics are required as quickly as possible.

Temperature OK, although I'm getting random hot sweats (yuck!). Tried some dangle feeding earlier which was a lot less painful!
Hopefully I can get to the doctors tomorrow.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll just have to grin and bare it for now.
