2 day old ds on drip for 24 hrs

My new son had a greeny brown vomit this morning which alarmed the midwife. They did an X-ray to see if he had a twisted gut now they are keeping him on a drip for 24 hrs in an incubator.

I can't bear it. I'm allowed to cuddle him if he cries but not feed him. Just about to hand express to keep my supply up. My milk hasn't come in yet but he did loads of sucking since he was born so I'm thinking I 'll have loads of milk.

I was going to post here last night as he.was trying to feed from 9pm to 4am and getting more and more agitated and angry. Finally at 4am I allowed midwife to give mil of formula. He wanted more and she wanted to give more but at only one day old I thought that would be enough. He finally settled at 6am then at 9am threw up what I assumed to be formula. But the greeny brown colour alarmed midwife.

Just wondered if anyone has any similar stories that can reassure me?!

I don't have exactly similar experiences but I didn't want to read and run. DD was born poorly and in NICU for a week, it is a horrible experience. He is in the best possible place. Try and remember to get a little bit of sleep if you can, and at least to eat. Hope he gets better soon and someone with some experience of this comes along x

Did you have mec in your waters when they broke? If you did he might have swallowed a bit when he was born and it's coming back up. Have they said why you can't feed him when they are giving him formula?

I hope it was a one off and all is fine but being at the hospital is the best place at the moment until they find out the cause. Ask them for a pump so you can express, if they need to know how much milk he's getting any colostrum/milk you get can be added to the formula they give him, this is what was done with my son when he was being fed by NG tube. The hospital keeps pumps for the mums with babies who are too poorly/small to feed at the breast.

It's hard but you need to rest and make sure you are looking after yourself, try not to burn yourself out, you've just given birth. Sending you a hug, it's so hard when they are in thier little fish tank and you can't just enjoy your new baby x

I used to work in a nicu and saw babies who had a vomit like this once and then were fine. The worry, as you say, is twisted gut, but this is obviously being looked into.

I would try a mechanical pump rather than just hands, to ensure the good sucking he did comes to something when your ds is off the drip.

Let us know what happens.

Thanks for your posts. They found no evidence of twisted gut. I had c section and they didn't mention if the waters were green but in my opinion seems most likely. I've got him back in my room now. He went almost /4 hrs with no food only sugar water drip. So he's really weak and sleepy. Such a difference from the bouncing boy I brought down to them the day before.
I'm trying to cuddle him as much as poss to get him interested in feeding. He's so sleepy it's quite hard. Any tips u can share are welcome. But thanks for your support so far!

Could you ask for the BF specialist midwife to come to see you? Sounds like you could do with some RL help.

You poor thing, sounds like you've had a terrible time. Lots of skin to skin contact. Try changing nappies, wet cotton wool on face to wake him up to feed.

How is he doing now? Hope things are improving.
